Do you like it? There is a chance we will be moving there and I am curious to know what the community is like. What is the housing like in that area? Is the economy ok? Are there any mom groups? What is the enviroment like for homebirths and midwifery? Thank you so much any insight you can give me!
We lived there for 3 years while my hubby was in seminary. We actually lived right on the battlefield at Seminary Ridge.
PA's economy actually seems to be doing OK. We'll have to see what happens when tourist season comes, because that's Pennsylvania's second largest industry.
I had a built-in community at the seminary. I'm not sure what the mom groups are now. My friend had a homebirth there with a midwife from Maryland. The crunchy stuff is all over the border in Maryland, LOL! There's a great natural food store called The Rose Garden.
We haven't been there in 7 years, so I'm sorry if this is outdated info!
We lived about 20 minutes from there in MD a few years ago and I enjoyed it. PA is crunchier for birth, but MD has a ton of great stuff within driving distance. I actually really enjoyed it there.
I just move to York PA which is about 45 minutes away. From what I have seen Gettysburg is much cooler than York. The town has a great little downtown with restaurants and antique/history stores. Good hiking in the area. I am in my first trimester and thus do not know about momma groups or midwives in the area, but I am on the hunt.

I went to seminary there!
I actually went to Gettysburg College... lived there for 3.5 years...
and then I commuted there through seminary.
So I was not a mom or aware of that aspect when I was living there... but it's a nice area, very walkable depending on where you live, and definitely close enough to drive to resources in MD and PA...
My parents live in York and so I know a little bit about the area. I also know a homebirth midwife in York and attended a homebirth in Yorkana back in 2005 so there are homebirthers and crunchy things out that way.

There's a great mom's group on Yahoo Meetup in York called York's Natural Minded Mommies. Check them out!

Can anyone tell me about jobs there? If we move there my DH will have a FT position, but I'll need to find a PT evening/weekend job.
Not that I've been looking for a job recently, but I think the economy is doing fairly well here and a p/t evening weekend job shouldn't be an issue. Gettysburg is known for it's tourism, so there should be plenty of summer jobs. I think there are plenty of diehard Civil War enthusiasts to keep the economy going in Gettysburg.
Very beautiful area to live, lots to do, but still with a small town feel!
