It now appears that DS is also having an issue with oats
I was hoping it wouldn't be a problem. I started feeding them to him regularly and he was getting the red ring so I stopped last week.

I do not know if it is just the gluten or if it is all oats he cannot tolerate. So I'd like to try some GF ones, preferably instant as I'm NOT a good cook. He was really starting to like oatmeal, too
I need to be able to give him something for bkfast other than eggs/cheese which he's been having nearly every morning for over a year. Eggs showed up 'low' and 'very low' for him on the ELISA IgG tests and oats showed up 'very low'. All blood tests came back negative for gluten.

I would like to try GF oats to see if it's just the oats in general or the gluten.

I think there is a bakery in our area that sells GF oats but I do not think they are instant. Any places online that sell it besides Red Mill (which I read here people have been glutened from, they still sell it at my co-op)?

FYI he also still has wheat issues so until now we have stayed GF just in case.

I've never seen an instant one.
Creamy Buckwheat cereal is similar to oatmeal in consistency. It's easy to make in the microwave (my 8yo makes it himself all the time).

Thanks, but we are staying away from buckwheat as it was the ONLY thing that showed as 'moderate' on the ELISA.

I tried a cocoa teff cereal once but he would not touch it. Is there any other hot cereal similar to oatmeal? I will still get some GF oats even if I have to cook them, just to try it and see if he can tolerate the GF ones.

ETA: Hmm, this site sells some in different flavors. It says CERTIFIED GF. So what does that mean, exactly? Who certifies it?

actually it looks like they have a lot of good GF stuff on this site. Anyone ordered from it and have good luck? I can get quite a bit of GF from my natural foods co-op but it's nice to have more options.

BURLINGTON, Wash.-Glutenfreeda Foods Inc., a leading wheat and gluten-free food manufacturer of gourmet gluten-free products, introduced a new line of instant oatmeal made with certified gluten-free oats and gluten-free frozen burritos that will be available in stores nationwide in early 2009. Glutenfreeda Foods developed the new instant oatmeal and burritos with natural and organic ingredients by producing them in a dedicated gluten-free facility to eliminate any potential for cross-contamination, which poses a serious health risk to those with gluten intolerances and allergies.
I also just read on a celiac board that McCann's Irish is GF although their website says there may be cross-contamination (isn't that the reason most oats aren't GF?). I think McCann's is what the local GF bakery may carry.

Anyone tried Lara's Rolled Oats from Cream Hill Estates? I read these are GF.
How about quinoa, that is GF correct? If DS likes oatmeal, might he like that?

cream of rice is a hot ceral, but texture wise it's more cream of wheat than oatmeal. And I didn't find the millet one appealing at all.

FWIW, I've heard that there's a way to make oatmeal in a rice cooker.
From a quick Google search ("rice cooker" oatmeal), here's one recipe.

ETA: That one uses milk, but I'm sure there are recipes which don't.

We eat Lara's Rolled Oats and really like them. They are not quick/instant, but 1 cup of oats and 2 cups of water, bring to a boil, and then simmer really low for about 5-7 minutes until they are soft is how we do it. We have major behavioral issues with gluten and it's usually very apparent (plus ds#2 will develop his eye-tic - constant blinking), and I've never noticed anything with the Lara's oats.

Thanks! I will see if I can get Lara's and maybe also try some cream of rice cereal. I just want a breakfast-y food that is healthy for him that he will eat and something that I can eat also (I mostly eat cold cereal but if he sees me eating it, he wants it to and I do not want him getting into the habit).

If he still has a problem with Lara's oats, I'll just assume he may have a gluten or wheat/oat intolerance since his celiac test was negative. His ELISA IgG for gluten was a 0 (no reaction) but then also so was wheat which he obviously still has a problem with. The IgG for oat was 'very low'.

Thanks for the oatmeal directions as I have no clue. What can I put on them to 'sweeten' them up for him? He liked the instant choco chip ones I got

I'm thinking a little brown sugar, or maple syrup, berries (although he may not go for that), what else?

We tried the Lara Oats here- but he still reacted. He likes some kind of sweetner in his oats- honey- maplesyrup etc- I like to add coconut oil as well for the extra fat. I like nuts in mine or maybe chopped fruit but he doesn't like anything in his hot cereal. He does Rice and Shine sometimes now which he likes.

Thanks for the suggestions! I made the rice cereal for the first time this morning but I don't know how well it turned out (seems I did not put enough water in, it was pretty thick) and he didnt' seem to like it. I put a little maple syrup in it but next time I will try butter and something else. Butter is probably better for him anyways (some protein, not all sugar) and I know he likes butter.

McCanns aren't certified GF like Cream Hill estates, but they are really less likely contaminated because they are imported.
Hmm, I suppose I could try both (and I thought Cream Hill estates was imported to the US from Canada?). I think my co-op sells the McCanns, and another co-op that is about 1/2 hour from my house sells Lara's so I haven't gotten Lara's yet.

Oh and it's easy to make cream of rice cereal with leftover rice (we like brown). Just whizz or pulse in blender or food processor with milk or alternative, fat and sweetener or flavoring, and heat up on stove.

I would try soaked oats.

Thanks! I do wonder if he has leaky gut that is actually CAUSING the issues, and that he possibly got it from MY leaky gut. I'm researching and trying to fix this right now (working with naturopath for a year now, currently on elimination diet myself. I'm not sure yet how to find out if he has LG or how to fix it). Good to know about the oats. He did not like the rice cereal the first time I made it but I dont think I did it right, it was too thick and clumpy. It's hard to get him to try something more than once.

Is there an online recipe for easy soaked oats that you can point me to? I'm sure I could find several but I'm not sure what is the best one.
