I can't even look. I took my hand and angled it by my eyes to cover the page so I could only see the very top right (so I'd be able to close the page) and had the kids look. Their smiles and big eyes were enough to show me how horrid it probably is.

I cannot do spiders. My number one fear.

Eh...ok, it is unusual but not as scary as I thought it would be, perhaps knowing that it was unusual. I guess I was expecting to see a spider the size of a cat! I am no fan of spiders. I grew up scared of them, demanding them to be removed from my presence (i.e. killed) because they scared me so much. Even teeny tiny ones.

Then I went to go live in Sri Lanka...Houses there are regularly kept open to the outside world...we had geckos regularly on our walls and my FIL did a regular evening "sweep" to take any frogs out of the indoor pond and place them back outside. I also had to come to terms, big time, with my fear of spiders since I could not ask my Buddhist husband to kill them. We had a very large one that resided in our bathroom at night. We (meaning me and the spider) reached an agreement - she (I had to assume it was a "she" since she was so civilized ) would stay away as long as I tapped my toes while I was doing my "business"...after a while she learned not to move, or to run away from the toilet, whenever I opened the door! We lived happily ever after...

Then there was the mongoose, but that's another story...

Meh. It's definitely scary and gross and big... but if you read it, it can't eat the bird all in one go... which is a bit bitter, anyway.

Ok, so here is the mongoose story...we were remodelling the master suite in Sri Lanka, so our ceiling was basically made of styrofoam sheets, with little between it and the roof. We sometimes heard small ground squirrels scampering around in the early morning (or at least that is what my DH convinced me they were)...One night, at around 2:00am, we hear a loud crash in the bathroom. Definitely too loud to be a squirrel, but thankfully too high up to be a monitor lizard (picture a baby croc, only harmless). As I sat there biting my nails, DH went in...a mongoose had apparently gotten up there and crashed through the "ceiling". After what seemed like an eternity of me yelling, "close the door, close the door, close the f-ing door", he did. We sat and listened to much rusting around, then it got quiet again. DH went back in - the mongoose managed to climb back up and out (with aid of shower curtain, maybe). We went back to bed. In the morning, I finally ventured into the bathroom. Apparently, the previous night's adventure had scared the crap out of the mongoose more than me...literally...and he could have used a dose or two of Imodium :puke

Ah, then there's the cow story...heavy monsoon rains, an untethered cow looking for shelter, an open door...and, thankfully, a quick and surprisingly strong sister-in-law. Sorry sir, no bovines allowed...but you are most welcome to hang out on the porch until the rain stops...thankfully no cleanup crew required...

I hate spiders. That was one big spider. I could not sleep knowing that thing was anywhere near my house.
