I want to get something for my SIL, she's a knitter. I don't want to buy yarn (we have very different tastes in colours for yarn!), ad she doesn't need needles. Any suggestions or links to send my way? I wanted to spend about $30. I thought of Lantern Moon tote bags, but they don't have much in that price range. I'm really stumped, and I did want to get a knitting related gift!

I know you said you don't want to buy yarn, but I don't consider this a normal "yarn purchase".... I'd get her a skein of luxury yarn. Cashmere or exotic like buffalo maybe. Something she wouldn't buy herself, because there are always more practical things to buy, but that she could use to make herself something yummy.

What about a nice needle case like this one?

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8219856

There are lots of great knitting books for around $30. My personal favorite is Last Minute Knitted Gifts.

Hi Alison

Who does your SIL knit for primarily? Maybe a book of patterns designed for that audience??

She knits mostly for a 4 year old, I think! I gave her books last year though, so really didn't want to give knitting books again.

I was wondering about a subscription to Interweave knits or something like that.

These are good ideas so far!

Oh, and Robyn, I don't suppose you're coming up this Christmas are you? It was lovely to see you all last year!

I'd probably go with one of those kniting totes that holds your yarn... they're not that much, a couple really nice stitch markers, and a book of patterns or skein of luxury fiber or handyed.

Alas, we are not making the trek this year....last year almost killed us...15 hour travel day, 3 different airplanes, non-napping 3 year old, non-sleeping 6 month old....it was BAD! We're hoping to do it this summer though.... I'm sad about missing xmas there, but I just can't do it to myself again!

hey....I had another gift thought. It's something someone gave me as a gift once.... It's put out by Interweave Press, and it's their 365 day calendar of stitches....or something like that. I use it alot when I'm making up a pattern, or changing a pattern that doesn't quite work for me.

Anyway, just a thought

A pretty bag outfitted with some knitterly accesseries -- retracting tape measure, tapestry needle, knit check, stitch markers, fold-up scissors & a maybe a pattern (or small stitch book, or interweave knits subscription or a book by the Yarn Harlot: Stephanie Pearl-McPhee).

Dude. I am hoping Santa leaves this exact combo in my stocking. *crossing fingers, baking extra-good Christmas cookies*

: I know you said that you didn't want to get her books again, but I love it when people buy me knitting books.

My SIL had my name this year and she gave me (we exchanged over Thanksgiving because they won't be here Christmas) this book,

http://www.amazon.com/Knitting-Peace...7046114&sr=8-1

She also gave me a nice tote bag for my knitting. I loved my present.

Some specialty stitch markers would be a neat gift, I think. Etsy has tons of them, everything from coffee beans to hearthstones (from world of warcraft).

I was at Michael's last night buying more supplies for presents, and I saw these cases for knitting needles. I have no need for this product, but I picked it up and looked at it. I think I was drawn to them because of the color, a soft green, and the inside is a warm brown. I'm a sucker for these colors together. They are pretty, and zip up so you can keep everything together nicely. I believe the smallest one is around $15.00. They come in different sizes, I don't remember how many, but I believe that there were at least 3 sizes.
