When ds was born we gave each of our midwives a homemade blueberry pie (the same as what we had prepared to eat after his birth), a copy of our birth music mix CD and then we got them each a cool piece of handmade local jewellery (one got a bracelet and one got a necklace).

As an aside, we also have blueberry pie at the time of his birth on his birthday each year too (7:00 am).

I think we're going to give some good local bread this time around.
Here's what we've done before:
#1 - never really did anything, then gave her photos at the 6 week pp visit.
#2 - strawberries & fudge.
#3 - a homemade card (with a turtle on it since she's a turtle lover) with photos of everyone after the birth (3 of her 5 kids were there) and a photo of the true knot in the cord since they're not very common.

One of the coolest gifts I've received from a client was 3 copies of Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. She thought that I could give them out as gifts to future clients or lend them out to whoever needed to borrow it. It was so thoughtful.

last time we bought her a piece of local jewelry

this time we went a little overboard because WE LOVE HER and we know this is our last kid... we got her the new birth pool in a box from waterbirth international so she could use it with us of course and then have it as part of her practice. she has been wanting it so we thought what the hay, let's get it!
i am so excited to give it ti her next week at our home visit!!!!!

We are thinking about this too. I think we're leaning towards making a donation in the MW's name to a non-profit midwifery group in the US, Asia or Africa.

http://onehearttibet.org/adonate.html
http://www.globalmidwives.org/sierraleone1.html
http://www.thebigpushformidwives.org/

for one mw, I know chocolate for sure. I'm not sure what I'd give the other, really.

I never gave the ob's presents, and didn't really realize til the other thread on our ddc that people commonly give their mw a gift.

My doula is training so I thought I would get her a fair trade bag to carry her stuff in. But I also want to give her a gas card to compensate her for the 2 trips she has made to see us and the trip she will have to make for the birth.

I think another good idea would be a gift certificate for a pedicure, if you think your midwife or doula would like something like that.

My mw travels 45 min to my home for my visits, and has clients all over the metro area, so we are thinking about a gas card. Not romantic or very interesting but might be practical.

For my doula, I think I will give her my copy of Aviva Romm's Natural Childbirth book. I bought it for myself but have only used it a little while pg and it is in really good shape. I think she will like it.

thanks for all the suggestions, I ended up going on etsty last night and buying them some handmade jewelry.

For the doula:

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9981091

for the midwife:

http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction...ion_id=9203591

Will probably throw in a basket with some candles and lotion type stuff if I can make it out to shop in this 9,000,000 degree weather.
