Hello Everyone,

I also posted this on the March due date board....

I am having trouble finding a girl name to go with Laura as a middle name (Laura was my dear sister who died of cancer last December). I don't think I'm emotionally ready to use Laura as a first name, but would love to use it as a middle name. Unfortunately, it doesnt go with most first names I've come up with.

Any ideas????

Also, what do you think of Josephine Laura?

I agree with you about Laura as a middle name. It just doesn't flow well with any of the names I thought of. But, I certainly understand not being ready to use it as a first name. What about naming her Laura something and then calling her by the middle name?? I like Laura Noel for some reason. Just sounds right.

Good Luck. Names were a big thing for us too.

PLEASE PLEASE do not do this to your child. As a Marjorie Beth who was called "Beth" since birth, I have a few reasons why.

1. Paperwork is a nightmare. My mom would tell the doctor "marjorie beth" when my dad would take me he would say "beth," sometimes there would be two files. Then my grandma moved in with us and she was also Marjorie so then it was even MORE confusing at doctor's offices, lenscrafters, etc. Every time I went ANYWHERE from the car dealership to the doctor to basically anywhere that has my name on file, I say "beth...well it could be under marjorie." ANNOYING

2. Every year, my teacher would call roll the first day of school and say Marjorie. Everyone thought it was hilarious. Yes, Marjorie is a little grandma-ish which was part of the problem, but regardless kids think its funny when a teacher calls you a name that you don't go by. Then you get at least a week of kids joking calling you by your first name. Sometimes longer.

4. One time I actually had a teacher who loved the named Marjorie so much she insisted on calling me that throughout the year. That was special. UGH.

5. The absolute worst part though was when I got married. I took my husband's last name. So that means I have now FOUR names. Marjorie MaidenName, Beth MaidenName, Marjorie MarriedName, Beth MarriedName. I sound like a schizophrenic when I go to the doctor's office now. "Hi, I'm Beth MarriedName...or it could be Marjorie MaidenName." Those are two TOTALLY different names. Its ridiculous and annoying. I wanted to change my checks to say Marjorie Beth MaidenName MarriedName until I got everything switched over AND THERE WASN'T ENOUGH ROOM ON THE CHECKS! Ridiculous but true.

I say make the middle name Laura. After my experience, I will never name my kid a name other than what I want to call them (unless its a reasonable nickname).

You could always do Lauren too if that would help and still honor your sister.

XOXO

I agree with Beth (aka Marjorie!)
. It seems like a major pain to go by a middle name, and I never understood why people did that.

I can't remember the last time I used my full name, first, middle, and last all together. Middle names are just for paperwork, and it doesn't matter to me at all if they don't "flow" when said outloud. So I vote for "firstname Laura lastname" for your baby...but I don't have any suggestions for the first name because I'm greedy with names and don't like suggesting ones I like.
sorry!

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! I am feeling less worried about how the first name/middle name flows.... and right now I'm leaning towards Josephine Laura! I really think this little bean is a girl....
