Some background:

I'm not overweight.
I show no signs of gestational diabetes.
I didn't have GD during my last pregnancy.
My weight gain is normal.
My blood pressure is normal.
The baby is normal.

So, why do I have to take this test?

If you are in a OB practice they could possibily kick you out....

I didn't do it this time. You could ask if there are alternatives they offer like finger blood tests for a week or how ever long it is.

Switch to a midwife and you don't have to.

I didn't take it either.

If people are worried I'd recommend a glucometer, that would probably be more accurate than the artificial situation test.

I think so too, and I was told -- possibly inaccurately -- "Oh, GD doesn't often present any symptoms."

Uh, then why is it a problem? And isn't that bullpuckey?

The risk with GDM isn't to you; it's to the baby in late pregnancy and immediately postpartum. Generally GDM doesn't have symptoms, and spilling or not spilling sugar in the urine in pregnancy is totally unreliable, since many non-diabetic pregnant women will spill sugar.

It's possible to have GDM with no identifiable risk factors, though less likely.

If you haven't already- read what Henci Goer has to say on the subject.

I have read Henci Goer's article. I've also had personal experience with infants of diabetic moms, whether GDM or pre-existing, and they are different. IDM often have a puffier appearance, not really related to their birth weight, and do have a higher frequency of both unstable sugars and immature lungs.

I had my two babies with two different dr.s/midwife and the first said I could eat and the second actually a CNM had me fast (very nauseating! and I went in as early as I could).

I have known several women that this has been totally inaccurate as they fasted too long before the test. They ended up taking it twice and the second reading was better. My last student (I teach Hypnobabies classes) had this happen. Fortunately just before her second glucose test I had her do some reading from our nutrition chapter and more specifically about Brewer's Diet and it helped her decrease her swelling and have a more accurate test.

If we have another baby we're going to go the homebirth route and i'll be so happy to not have to deal with this particular test!
