The past two times I've seen my midwife, she noticed I have glucose in my urine. She thinks it is due to the fact that I am not getting enough protein

I was a vegan up until I had some allergy testing done 3 months ago. It came back with a whole list of foods I can't have. Now the only animal products I have been eating are egg yolks (allergic to the whites) and goat cheese.

Well, she said I really need to get more protein. Basically, I am trying my darndest to up the beans, nuts, and rice protein powder but there's only so much I can do. I am so sick of all the foods I am constantly eating everyday....my diet is so limited. Dairy and soy are out. The soy eliminated a whole lot of my protein intake through things like tofu, tempeh, alternative meat products, etc.

So I'm eating MEAT. I stopped at the natural foods store and got turkey sausages, chicken hot dogs and turkey lunch meats. I can't believe I am going to eat MEAT! It's been so long and I'm not totally sure I can do it without gagging. I'm really, really distressed about this.

Can you gals reassure me that I am doing this for the baby and that it's okay to eat meat?? Any good recipes I can use for things like chicken and turkey? I'm allergic to just about everything but veggies, fruit, rice, potatoes, nuts and beans, so the recipes I could use will be few.

Only 4 more weeks...

i've never been vegan but was a strick vegetarian for 4years. i found that after time i just wasnt healthy enough not getting any meat (different for everyone) i still dont eat beef or pork, the only red meat i'll eat is deer cuz it seems so much more natural. i would say you're better off eating fish, dont know where you live, it makes a HUGE difference in taste if the fish is fresh - i got soooo spoiled when i lived in sitka, alaska!!! - but it just makes my body feel so rejuvinated when i eat it! plus it has the omega fatty acids that you miss out on when you dont eat a super well rounded diet or use supplements like flax oil, and let me tell ya, being preg, your body gives those good fatty acids to the babe before you cuz they need it for their brain and nervous system development -- but you need them badly to maintain your brain and nervous system functions too!!! -- i dont know that the sausages and lunch meats will be that good for you imo. it makes me feel better about eating meat when i know it comes from a good source where the animal was treated humainly ... find some fresh chicken from a local farmer or something, and if you want i have a good recipe for a spicy thai peanut sauce that goes really well with chicken -then you get protein from the peanut and the chicken and mmmmmmmmmmmm!
good luck to ya, it is a big adjustment i know

Thanks

If I had known earlier, I would have gone to the local farmer's market this morning to pick up some local chicken. But I just got back from my appt. and it's closed now. So I stopped at the natural food store. The chicken hot dogs and turkey slices are from free-range birds, contain no preservatives or nitrates. That's okay, isn't it? Gosh, I already feel guilty enough about eating it...

I was mostly vegetarian & have been eating chicken this pregnancy as well because I am so frustrated with eating the same things over & over again. I would suggest searching for recipes at www.allrecipes.com You can search for recipes based on things you want included & not included so you can avoid your allergic foods. Also what about seitan? I've never had it, but it is not soy, it is gluten...are you allergic to gluten? GL!
