My DD's grandfather has just passed away, and I am looking for good, simple picture books about death or losing a loved one. She is 21 months old, but is very verbal and can understand somewhat complex themes. We have explained the death to her, but she is still asking about it a lot and I think a book would help.

We don't believe in God or an afterlife, so I would prefer books about the physical concept of death and the importance of remembering a loved one. I have found lots of lists of books, but am looking for a more personal recommendation.

Hmm i cant think of any particular books maybe if you get on amazon and search around for something pagan?/

However, maybe it would be good ( if you do a anature table) or just set up an area and place a pic of him there and just keep it simple explanations. I really think at that age its to hard for them to understand someone never comes back to see them: tomorrow, a week, a month. they still live in the NOW!

The only good children's book about death that I can think of is The Next Place by Warren Hanson - but according to the Amazon link its at a 9-12 year old reading level. I was surprised by that, though... Its a very sweet, touching book about how different and peaceful "the next place" will be without going into any details that would make it specific to any religion (except that it wouldn't lend itself well to reincarnation). I love it, but can't read it without crying...

It focused on all badger's friends and the memories they each had of time with him.

I'll Always Love You by Hans Wilhelm is a good book about death. It specifically deals with the death of a beloved dog, not a human, but it still hits the issue straight on and without a lot of spirituality. The Two of Them by Aliki deals with the death of a grandfather specifically. If she's having trouble dealing with feelings, My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss is a great book, as well as The Feelings Book by Todd Parr.

Here is a list of other titles I found I Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...675815-1921740

I'm sorry for your loss. Good luck.

So sorry for your loss.

Dog Heaven and Cat Heaven are good books if you believe in Heaven. They are about pet losses but it's still a good couple of books.
