Good magazines for 6+ yo

561 Views 14 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  mamaduck
My MIL is thinking about getting a mag. subscription for my ds' birthday. He is reading at a 3rd grade level, loves geography, insects, mammals, architecture. etc. She was considering National Geographic Kids, but we just want to make sure that is a good one or see if there is something more appropriate for his interests. Any opinions or ideas?

Thanks

I have heard that National Geographic Kids is heavy on advertizing, so you might want to check that out.

DS is 5 and recieved LadyBug. He likes it.

DD (8) gets Ranger Rick which they both like.

You really can't go wrong with the Cricket line of magazines:

bleah to natl geo kids. too many ads! if he likes that kind of thing, Ranger Rick would be a better choice -- can't remember for sure, but i think it's ad free. i loooove the magazines from the cricket group www.cricketmag.com. there are never any ads and they have all sorts for age ranges from bab to teen. there's sure to be something for him there. you can check out sample pages on their website.
tiredx2, too funny

National Geographic Kids does run advertising which makes me like it a lot less (and some of the ads are disguised as articles). However, Ask is a huge hit around here. It's written at a couple of levels between 3rd and 6th grade level and is focused on science and the arts. Each issue centers around a central topic. The last two have been Illness and Wellness and Cats Large and Small. My dd is very science oriented and LOVES it. If your ds is looking for more technical detail, try Oddessey. It is more strictly science centered, but is more at a 5th-7th grade reading level. The diagrams rock. Both of these are from Carus publishing.
My 6yo loves ZooBooks. Each issue focuses on one type of animal. No ads.
My kids love "Your Big Backyard" Great photos of animals and bugs. No ads. Put out by the National Wildlife Association. Although, maybe your child would want more text. I think "Ranger Rick" is the next one up.
I will just second the recommendation for Ask magazine. My parents gave my 7 yo dd a subscription for Christmas and she loves it. She also likes Ranger Rick.
You could try www.owlkids.com. Chikadee is for his age group, but if he's quite advanced, you could always consider Owl.
Thanks so much for all the recommendations. Dh and I are looking over all of them and I am sure we will find one that he will LOVE. I am excited for him already

My 6yo loves his "Highlights" subscription that his grandparents bought him!

Though I just went back and read that you're looking for something a little more sciency. This is a great alternative, though.
I think this thread should be made a sticky. Great info.

My mom was asking to buy our dd a magazine and I had no ideas. We couldnt even find much googling for some reason.

Both my 4 yo. and my 9 yo. love the various mags available from the Cricket Mag group. They are pricey, but worth it!

This may be a bit advanced, but after Ranger Rick, in a few years (about age 9) Birds and Blooms is an excellent mag.
My older son loved Kids Discover http://www.kidsdiscover.com/ at about ages 7-9. So maybe its a little advanced for what you want? I'm not sure. But its worth checking out.

That makes me think though, that its time to pull those old issues out for my second child who is now 6 and reading...
Thanks for the reminder!
