The comments on the article are what we've all come to expect of people. A few supporting nip, the rest complete idiots who seem to think breastfeeding is like urinating.

Interesting. Some major jerk comments from men it appears. Why does such a natural thing always have to be such big controversial issue....

I especially like the comments about how she shouldn't be nip in front of her older kids...as if they don't see that at home anyway!

I love these boards . . . people really show their true colors to how uneducated they are! I couldn't help myself and posted a response:

"America is an amazing place, to be sure.

In a land where everyone is bombarded by sexual images of scanitly clad women in magazine ads, on billboards, or simply walking down the street, so many people are outraged at the idea of a mother feeding her child in a place of public accommodation.

Breastfeeding is a normal, non-sexual and healthy way to feed and nurture a child. When a woman breastfeeds in public she does not pose a health risk to other patrons, she does not leave behind a mess to be cleaned up (as would urinating or defecating in public), and she often saves everyone from the ear-piercing shrieks of a hungry child.

As many people know, nursing in public is a complete non-issue in other countries. America is simply behind the curve in terms of awareness and education about the issue.

And as for me, I'll be the first one not to breastfeed in public when all of the advertising and television programs out there, as well as malls, restaurants and other public places institute dress codes to "protect" me and my children from the evil effects of seeing something "inappropriate" in public."

I just wish I could have included the bf symbol with my response!

I think the right word for most of these people is "troll". They are posting only to cause trouble. Its a growing problem on the internet.

"As a WOMAN, I am outraged that you think it's acceptable. It is disgusting and wrong in public. I once told a woman who was doing this in Walmart to go home and get her jollies in her own place. It is filthy and I would NEVER do it in public-Just like i would not urinate in public or have my hands down my pants in public. Women who do this in public are looking for people to loom at them and pay attention to them while the kid is just making a fool of himself. "

did you girls see this one??!! OMGosh, she is comparing breastfeeding to urinating and putting her hands down her pants. That's just sick!!!! If I were that woman in walmart and didn't have a baby in my arms..lemmi tell you:

I can't find the comments link. But I am happy that the author of the article is a man!!!

let me get this straight--she was discreetly feeding and STILL got kicked out?? So it was the idea of bf'ing that the restaurant didn't like, not even her "indiscretion."

As for the "generation gap" comments, he is spot-on. That's yet another thing to be criticized by my grandmothers about after the baby. : My paternal grandmother couldn't even really afford formula, but she used it anyway becuase bfin'g "just wasn't done," and when my sister was born and my mom was bf'ing her, both my grandmothers told her "That's barbaric and disgusting."

So, society must have put a HUGE stigma on it!! Glad I'm not of that generation.

Did you see that reply to another woman who was suppourtive of NIP... all the angry smilies in the world couldn't convey my feelings toward that statement.....

Oh and that comment the author cited about someone saying women should just stay home?? Hello??!! What does a woman being in a restaurant have to do with women working vs. staying home with their kids?? Does she support total house arrest for new moms?

it was the stay at home with your kids part of the argument that really confused me, too. you should stay at home with your kids . . . and someone said they shouldn't have to . . . and someone else says 'oh so its all about you and not really about your kids' :

now that i've read all thru all of it, i'm not going to comment on there any more. it sounds like theres some people who are just trying to make trouble, and anything anyone says that is pro bf or pro nip is just going to get stupid, immature and (UA violation) comments thrown at them.

(i.e. 'if your husband was there he'd be looking at my *** because yours are saggy from getting sucked on by a bratty kid.)

and i have to say that people who say that they should burp and fart in public make me cuz that's so not offensive to me. dh is what we call a 'fecal-phile' and loves burping and farting . . .

I agree about the trolling. keep in mind that many Internet trolls are people who actually are on one side trying to make the other side look bad. So they *could* be pro-bf'ing folks trying to make a fool of the other side, just like conservatives will come on a conservative board and try to make liberals look foolish by acting like an extremist one, or vice versa.

I hope that's not the case however, because we need folks on our side to write maturely and defend us, not act like parodies of the anti's.

Or, trolls could be someone who is neutral on the issue who just likes to stir up trouble and watch hundreds of comments result from their remarks. Sort of star-craving for attention. Like that group handing out pamphlets at one of the political conventions in NYC that said "outlaw breastfeeding." they later came out and said, "Haha, gotcha, we were just looking for a reaction." :

I called the man who wrote this article to thank him. I got his voicemail and left a message....and he called me back!!

He told me that he only gets calls when people are upset and he was pleased and flattered that all of us mommas were reading his article all over the country! What a great guy.
