How long do goopy eyes usually last? Fiona's four weeks old today and her eyes have been goopy for about three weeks. I've been keeping them clean, but they don't seem to be improving all that much.

Both my boys had blocked tear ducts, too, but I forget how long it took to clear up.

Thanks!

You can squirt a little breastmilk in her eyes a few times every day. Works like a gem!

DD had them for about 3 months....DS was the same. My pedi says that they wait until (I think) 9 months to discuss doing anything besides squirting breastmilk in them and massaging the tear-ducts.

my firstborn had clogged tear ducts and we massaged them and dripped bm in them faithfully, every day. the ducts didn't completely open until he was around 9 months, but his eyes weren't goopy all that time. Only goopy occasionally. Any other stress to his system (teething, cold, rash, etc) would make his eyes seem worse for a couple days, but FTMP, he just had a perpetual teary eye with a spot of redness below (both sides were clogged, but the right was worse than the left). BM, massage, and a bit of salve on the redness is all we did to treat it.

Our doctor said that clogged ducts would quite often clear up before the first birthday, and anyway they wouldn't really do anything about it (surgery, etc.) before a year even if it didn't heal on it's own. Of course, that was 6 years ago, I have no idea what the protocol is now, LOL!

(merely coincidence that the only one of my babies to have trouble with this was also the only baby to have antibiotic eye goop at birth?? Hmmmm.... )
