Has anyone read this? I just finished it and all I can say is, wow.

For those who aren't familiar: this book is a scathing criticism of the US federal government emphasizing the 9/11 attacks and the Oklahoma city bombing, as well as Waco, with forays into discusions of the war on drugs, agri-business and the destruction of family farms and uptight notions of sexual morality. The main message is that the US federal government is waging war against its own citizens.

I didn't need this book to tell me that the war on drugs is a gross miscarriage of justice, but I was horrified by the following description of a drug raid that took place in 1992 in Everett, WA in which a woman was shot.

She was with her sis year old daughter and five year old niece when the police broke in. As the bravest storm trooper, named Aston, approached her, gun drawn...she started to crouch onto her knees. She looked up at Aston and said 'please don't hurt my children...'Aston had his gun pointed at her and fired, shooting her in the neck.

This book made me incredibly angry. Does anyone want to discuss Vidal's criticisms of our government?

He has been writing great books for decades. This is only the latest. Some are novels and some are commentary. He is one of the more sensible American writers out there...but he has to live in Ravello, Italy to do it: It is overpowering to have to live here at the same time...I found it so much easier to think about our political system and messes when I didn't have to live here hearing all the general obfuscatory crap that crosses my path every day.

I thought most knew about the Everett raid. It is one of those police raid abuses that got a fair amount of attention (for once) like Ruby Ridge did. Not that that changes the authorities' behaviour.

Scary, huh?

Hmmm...I thought maybe this thread would generate some interest because, apparently, PBS recently did a special on Vidal, and this book was controversial. He couldn't get it published in the US for a while.

Anyway, thanks for the reply, sohj.

Bad things happen when Father tries to control his Kids too much. Our government is like a drunk strict Christian man trying to instill the fear of God into his children. (No, no, I know that there are far more *good* Christians in the world than *bad* ones, but since we live in a Christian society with Christian rules and values, it was the best example I could come up with: )
The more that man tightens his belt and yells at his children, the more disruptive they become. Can't we have an "attachment parenting" government
I can't wait to move to the Netherlands

i saw the piece on Gore Vidal on PBS and was totally enthralled. He is brilliant. And I hate that word.
He really gets it. Do a google search on him and you'll find tons of links.
I hear if you write to him in the old home town in italy he may write back to you.

I wish I could have dinner with him. He is so SMART.
