I just got back from my "friend" baby shower ("family" shower to follow next month) and one of the women gave me one of those disposable diaper "cakes."

Now it wouldn't be that weird except that this friend KNOWS that I'm planning on cloth diapering, and that my reasons for it are not just cost but keeping chemicals away from my baby and keeping diapers out of the landfills.

At one point she even leaned over to me and said, "I know you're planning on cloth diapering, but oh well, this is the way this cake is made."

What?!

Do you think this has anything to do with the fact that she tried cloth diapers with her kids and hated them?

You can donate the dipes to a woman's shelter- to somebody who'd be putting dipes in the landfill anyway.

Jeepers- she couldn't fill a baby bathtub with bath toys and toiletries??? That makes just as cute a centerpiece as a diaper cake!!

Arg! Sounds like it's one of those "I've had a baby and you're just operating on theory" digs to me!!!!!

Soooo not nice. She's probably thinking, you're going to LOVE her and THANK HER profusely when break into them.
Maybe you can give it back to her if she has another baby?

Some WAHM on here makes really pretty cloth diaper cakes from tie dye prefolds. I can't remember who, but if this ***nice*** lady had her heart set on a diaper cake, they're out there in cloth. I agree with PP - save it for her next shower. haha

I have never heard of this........disposable diaper cake? I saw a pp's idea though and yeah, a baby tub with toiletries in it would be a GREAT gift!

You know what would be the most AWESOME gift of all time though? in my book anyway?

Well.......for my wedding shower at school, one of the teachers sold pampered chef......and it was no secret that I LOVE LOVE LOVE PC. So everyone in the building donated $$ for a card and I ordered $150 bucks of stuff from the teacher who sold it.

The most awesome baby shower gift would be having them all do that, but for me (or any cd'in mama) to buy dipes from a WAHM.....

The THOUGHTFUL thing to do with that $$ for a sposie dipe cake.....whatever that is anyway, would've been put it in a card and let you buy the cd's she knows you WANT with it! jmo

Return the unopened packages to Wal-Mart.

Is it just me or is that an idiotic remark?

Yeah, she's probably one of those people who's sure you're not going to stick with cloth.

I got one too, from in-laws who knew we were using CDs

I just don't get it. It had sposies, baby bath and lotion (we don't use that kind), disposible bibs, a couple of plastic toys, etc. They're expensive, too!

Oh well.

Don't those cakes partly consist of unopened packages? I guess it's been a while since I've seen one (thank goodness!).

I went to a shower last week. I had been talking to her about cloth. I got the I could try it response. So I asked her if I gave her cloth would she use it? She said she would like to try it. So I gave her a cloth diaper cake. It was the hit of the party! I got to explain how CDs have changed. A couple of the mild critics at the start were looking at the instructions I put with it. HEE HEE!

I don't get why people do stuff like that. WAY rude IMO.

But when it comes to gift giving, sometimes you just have to smile and nod. Then do some returning the next day

At my shower, I specificially said I had all the nb clothing I'd need, and to buy clothing in size 3mos and up. I recieved, instead, about 30 onesizes in size 0-3m :LOL

Yeah, it bothers me so much when someone's expressed wishes aren't respected. I have stated very plainly (and repeatedly) to everyone in my extended family that we do not use plastic toys or non-organic clothes, and I have subsequently received TONS of both kinds of things from practically everyone in my extended family.

Some people always think they can change people's minds
I agree that selling it on Ebay would be a good idea -- someone will love it somewhere. My friend made me a diaper cake but it was done with cloth -- too bad that "friend" didn't respect your wishes and try to find something you would like. Bummer

If you look on ebay, you can usually find both dd and cd cakes. I made a dd cake for my sister, but she has no intention of using cloth and she loved it. I have a friend who is pregnant and uses cloth. I will probably make her a cloth diaper cake.

I think both kinds of diaper cakes are adorable, but people should definitely get what the mama will actually use.
