Got milk?'Wish I didn't!

hi all
I'm trying to detour my ds's LOVE for milk.He would drink it exclusively if I let him. He's four 1/2 and has some special needs(Down Syndrome)also with a BAD gut.He has a long and crappy gut history with 4 tummy surgeries before we adopted and brought him home at 3 months old.Anyway---he used to only drink water,I should've never given him milk b/c now that's all he wants.I know it's only aggravating his gut issues(typical likeness to leaky gut,too long to go into though)
What exactly are any options I have for him to get him off the 1% supermarket milk. When he was younger he drank soy milk,he's VERY picky to tastes now I don't even know if he would be willing to try it.Also, from what I've read recently,is soy even a good option anymore?I don't give the kids any juice so milk or water is it.I hope someone will be able to help me make this transition away from milk for him. Thanks!

What about trying him on raw milk (if you can get it in your state)? Raw milk contains all the good enzymes and probiotics that are killed during pasteurization, plus all the good fat that is changed during homogenization. You can find more info about raw milk at Real Milk.

I'd definitely stay away from the soy - way too much controversy there for my taste. If he has a bad gut, have you joined the "Heal the Gut" thread? (I think it's in the Health and Healing forum.) They have tons of info on healing their dc's guts (and their own too).
Rice milk? Oat milk? Almond milk? Or cut back slowly from the dairy milk back to water, watering it down?
Rice milk is one of the more pleasant and least-distinctive-tasting alternatives, though it doesn't have much nutritional value apart from the added vitamins. Maybe you could try mixing half rice and half regular and gradually increasing the rice milk?

I second this!!! Books that may help are Nourishing Traditions and The Maker's Diet. Also look for info in www.westonaprice.org I am sure they have articles on gut problems..many people sem to find success on these kinds of diets.

We drink raw milk and have no problems so far...ds drink goats since he is allergic to cows thus far.

Blessings, Jennifer
Coconut milk? I used canned when I was off dairy temporarily. But you can order online stuff that's in aseptic packages, which would probably taste better. Or I know there are ladies around here who could tell you how to make your own.
I have to put in a good word for raw milk too. My ds and I were both sensitive to pasteurized, homogenized cow's milk, but have found no problems at all with (and in fact have benefitted much from) raw cow's milk.
