if you're really nervous, ask her exactly what the desired effects are and make sure that's something that you want.

but i don't think she would have given it to you if she were worried that it would have negative effects or the baby would come before it was ready.

i'm a labor doula and my experience with cohosh has been that it's very helpful IF your baby is already planning to come out, anyway. it's a nudge, not a shove. it's not going to launch you into a labor that your body isn't ready for.

It's like "cold feet." Except I cant just "go..." I had an easier time with the hardcore stuff I had to dropper on my tounge every 10 minutes and then labor started immedietly.

Less time to think about it.

I took a course of several herbs per my midwive's instructions after my water broke with my 1st. They wanted labor to start so I didn't "time out" of a birth center birth and/or have to take IV abx (I got her out 10 minutes before the abx deadline).

I know both of the cohoshes were included as well as two other herbs...one was penny something and the other had a coyote on the bottle, but I can't remember what it was. I don't think I'd do it again w/o doing some research first, though I had no discernable problems from taking it.

Can you find out what the side effects/risks might be and see if that makes you more comfortable?

As I understand it, the 5w formula is similar to the Polly-Jean formula. I've just started using it (Polly-Jean), and while it does have cohosh in it, don't let it scare you! It is a very small amount mixed in with the other herbs, and the effect is not to induce, but to prep the uterus, cervix, etc. It is basically a tonic, the herbs support your body as it prepares to birth, and it also promotes healing after the birth.

Of course, if you don't actually *know* what is in the formula, I'd definitely ask for all the ingredients, but if it is a basic 5-week formula, I wouldn't be nervous about it, and I definitely wouldn't think of it as an inductive measure.

Most of them you start with a lower dose and gradually increase....pay attention to the frequency/intensity of your bh ctx the first few days, and if they increase suddenly or by a lot, then you may be more sensitive to some of the ingredients and you might want to back off the dosage (amount or frequency) a bit. I purposely waited to start the Polly-Jean until we got back from my in-laws at Thanksgiving. Didn't want to do *anything* to encourage the baby to come until we were home, safe and sound, LOL!
