check out this totally mainstream advice- don't read the link about baby's naps unless you want your head to literally explode, though
- her rule #1 for naps is that YOU decide when the naps starts and ends, not the baby! ugh!

it all is going fine until several paragraphs down where she makes people paranoid about how much weight the baby is gaining and says they should have at least 3 bowel movements per day...whaaaa?

If you choose to breastfeed, it is very important that you take your baby for their check-ups as needed. If you don't, how will you know if he is getting enough milk and growing at the correct rate? There is no way for you to tell that your child is getting enough nutrition for sure without your child being weighed.

Oh yeah, wet diapers and a happy baby have NOTHING to do with it!

That sounds like those docs who used to make BFing moms weigh their babies before and after every feeding during the "formula is better" era.
From the article: Breastfeeding problems, such as milk production difficulties, are not as common when using the PDF feeding method, but they do occur.

Isn't PDF "Parent Directed Feeding" a la Babywise? The horror! This article stinks.

And what about this?

Some things that can affect your milk supply are:

• What mom eats
• How much mom rests and sleeps
• Her state of mind
• The age of the mom
• How many children you have
• Your desire to breastfeed
• Your nursing capabilities
• Your nursing techniques
• Baby's latch on abilities

Your desire to breastfeed? The age of the mom? WTH? Um, ladies, there's a link to her blog at the bottom of the article...

The things that jumped out at me in that list were "how many children you have" and "your nursing capabilities." What do other kids have to do with it? And that "nursing capabilities" thing sounds like that old "Lots of women just CAN'T breastfeed" argument. Sounds like she's setting you up for failure by making is sound like you can try everything, but some women just won't be capable of nursing.
sigh
Sooooo...if I DON'T take my baby in for check up's I won't know if she's grown?? Interesting.

I read that in a mainstream parenting book at the consignment shop the other day, can't think of the title for the life of me...I was sitting there thinking...Whaaaa?

Thats terrible advice! I hope no one takes her seriously!
Ya'll might NOT want to check out her blog...

Circumcision: Many doctors agree that there may be some benefit to circumcision, but it may not be absolutely necessary. It may help to lower the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer. Circumcision does not cause long-term emotional problems for your child.
before reading the whole thing I wrote this in her comments, she did mention wet and dirties, but in a stupid way

I'm sorry, but I have to say that your breastfeeding information is almost totally false. What you eat CAN affect your milk supply, but only if you're not getting enough calories, rest really has little to do with it, state of mind only if you have the state of mind that a baby should only eat every 3 hours or something ignorant like that. I'm utterly confused about how the number of children you have could POSSIBLY affect your milk supply. My great-grandmother had TEN boys and she was able to nurse her youngest just as easily as she was the oldest. Your desire does have an affect as women who are apthetic or have the ridiculas notion that formula is 'just as good' or equal nutritional value are more likely to give up when they run into the lighest dificulty.

And you made NO mention of counting wet and dirty diapers as opposed to watching the scale. Almost all the growth charts are geared toward artifically fed babies ranter than nursing babies. Artifically fed babies grow differently than naturally fed babies. So going by the scale or growth chart is not always a good idea. Breastfed babies should have at least 5 wet diapers a day, that is the best way to judge your babies intake of breastmilk. Breastmilk is nearly 100% digestable so not all naturally fed babies have a bowel movement every day, that is totally normal.

I really hope you are not attempting to set new mama's up to fail at breastfeeding. You should really contact LLL or check out kellymom.com for more accurate and helpful breastfeeding advice.

Thank-you

Renae, good comment! I think if someone ever quoted this to me, I'd just have to laugh in disbelief. Still would like to hear how the # of children you have can affect your supply...I've never heard that one before!
imagine if she met my 100% bfed baby who only pooped once a week

While I don't agree with her advice as a woman of color, its nice to see a WOC advocating breastfeeding. I believe the baby in the blog was her baby (I know she could have adopted but I am going to assume not). Black women have a lower rate of BF'ing than white woman and my guess is she is attempting to be helpful.

I agree it may be morse useful to point her towards more accurate advice.

Doesn't number of kids affect supply at least in the beginning because if you've already nursed a baby you have prolactin receptors already laid down from the first baby, that you don't have if it's your first baby?

Otherwise--I didn't read the article but I agree that the part you quoted here sounds mostly like hooey.
maybe she meant that if you have already nursed one or more it becomes easier with each one?

obviously if your desire to breastfeed is great, if it is truly important to you, you will put forth much more efforts to make it happen.

i agree this woman did make some innacurate statements and that last bit about having no way to judge your babies growth was just ludicrous(sp?) but at least she is trying (i think) to encourage moms to breastfeed.
I like her assumption that a formula fed baby will automatically grow right if given X amount of ounces a day and doesn't need to be checked by a doctor. Especially seeing as I know that people end up having to feed more of some types of formula than others to keep their baby fed.

If she is trying to be supportive, that would be good, because then she'd be more open to learning.

Actually, there's a question, while naturally not wanting to go into the whole "separate but equal" crappola, Shay, do you think having a website like kellymom that has elements specifically addressed to WOC would be good? Like kellymom has links that specifically address some issues WOC may face, but this other site would make that information more prominent and then provide links to kellymom and other info?

I'm not sure what would be the answer, after all I am a WOC and utilize sites like Kellymom and MDC and have no problem with the fact that its not geared specifically towards WOC. On the other hand perhaps a more targeted site would be useful, I wonder if that's what the author of this site was trying to do. Hard to say.

So many stupid people, so little time.
:

Gosh, thank goodness for my doctor's scale or I never would have known my baby was growing and getting milk. All those wet diapers and clothes he outgrew never would have told me anything.

Maybe he was just pretending to swallow, babies can be manipulative you know.

last I checked...if I feel like it I can weigh my baby MYSELF and not have her charted on a Nestle chart based on the growth of FORMULA FED BABIES!!! GRR.
