I was slinging Isadora at the local public library today, waiting in line to pick up my copy of Our Babies, Ourselves that had been brought over from another branch as per my online request.
The woman (mid 50s/slight British accent) in front of me smiled and commented that Isadora has such a mature face. I agree - she's very observant and often has furled brows as she analyzes her surroundings.
I asked if she has any children and she said, yes - I have four although it's been a while since they were that small. I noticed a tiny glint of remembrance in her eyes like she was thinking back to when her children were babies.
She lowered her voice, moved in a bit closer and asked - is she breastfed? I said absolutely. She replied - I could tell.

She then went on to tell me how she nursed her children until they were around 1.5 years old.

I just wanted to share. It made me feel so happy to hear her say that she could tell Isadora is breastfed.

And, you know...for as long as I've been nursing Isadora (I nurse her quite a lot in public without covering up and sling her whenever I don't require a stroller) I've only had positive reactions from strangers. The only negative thing I've ever heard was when I went to my Mom's office last week and one of her co-workers (mid 30s or around there - she's a mom, too) was talking about how gross breastfeeding is. She asked how long I plan on nursing Isadora for and I told her until she's in high school. Guess I'll have to volunteer to shaperone at the prom!

That will be a good one to tell Isadora when she is older! Thanks for sharing with us.

I had an experience like that, too, when Tessa was about 6 months old. She was crying in the music store at the mall & I sat down on a bench in the store & nursed her. After I left the store, an older woman (in her 80s) who had been in the store, too, came up to me to tell me how healthy Tessa looked & how wonderful it was that I was nursing her - she was getting big & strong from my milk; keep it up, etc. It is great, isn't it? I usually don't expect older women to be as supportive.

What a great comment. I love those types of compliments/comments.

I had to go to my family practitioner to get checked out for strep throat a couple weeks ago. She knows that DD is still nursing and said how great it was that I was still nursing. She asked how long I planned on nursing (not in a demeaning way). I let her know that dd's doctor said that I should nurse for at least 18 months and she was impressed. She said "I heard that you should try for a year". It was so cool that I could educate my own family practioner!
