I was slinging Isadora at the local public library today, waiting in line to pick up my copy of Our Babies, Ourselves that had been brought over from another branch as per my online request.
The woman (mid 50s/slight British accent) in front of me smiled and commented that Isadora has such a mature face. I agree - she's very observant and often has furled brows as she analyzes her surroundings.
I asked if she has any children and she said, yes - I have four although it's been a while since they were that small. I noticed a tiny glint of remembrance in her eyes like she was thinking back to when her children were babies.
She lowered her voice, moved in a bit closer and asked - is she breastfed? I said absolutely. She replied - I could tell.
She then went on to tell me how she nursed her children until they were around 1.5 years old.
I just wanted to share. It made me feel so happy to hear her say that she could tell Isadora is breastfed.
And, you know...for as long as I've been nursing Isadora (I nurse her quite a lot in public without covering up and sling her whenever I don't require a stroller) I've only had positive reactions from strangers. The only negative thing I've ever heard was when I went to my Mom's office last week and one of her co-workers (mid 30s or around there - she's a mom, too) was talking about how gross breastfeeding is. She asked how long I plan on nursing Isadora for and I told her until she's in high school. Guess I'll have to volunteer to shaperone at the prom!
