Great website for supporting those in Iraq

An easy way to support the soldiers (regardless of whether you support the reason they're there). Check it out!

www.booksforsoldiers.com

Send your old books and magazines to someone in Iraq who will use them. Some soldiers are requesting certain authors, some are asking for DVDs or CDs, some just want postcards of support. There are even some posts about entire units that need socks and toilet paper!

In most cases, the mailing address provided is a military base - then the mail is sent from there - so just a letter of encouragement or a birthday card is only 37 cents!

Thank you for posting that!

It's a great idea to have place where soldiers and Marines can post their name, address and reading material request. Please note that letters or packages addressed to "Any Soldier" or "Any Marine" will not be delivered. That has been done in the past, but because of security concerns, the military no longer allows it. However, you can still donate to "any servicemember" via two programs.

The first program is a relatively new one called Help Our Troops Call Home, which allows anyone to purchase phone cards for either a designated member of the military or for "any servicemember." If you scroll down a bit further on that same page, you'll find information on the second program, The Gift of Groceries, which allows you to purchase gift certificates that can be donated to designated servicemembers and family members or for "any servicemember."

That link is in my post above yours. Here it is again. At that page, you can find links to the Army & Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps Exchanges, who are sponsoring the program.
sorry, I didn't even click on the link

No problem! Our posts just bumped this up again...who knows, maybe now someone will see it who wants to support one of these programs.

Here's a workaround to the problem of not being able to send to "any soldier" - some soldiers have volunteered their addresses and hand out the packages. I haven't sent anything through them, but I found the site recently:
http://www.anysoldier.us/

If anyone sends stuff successfully through them, maybe you can report back? My brother came back in late Jan. 2004 and says that he has heard that the PXs are pretty well set up now. Do they still run out of TP?

I would like to send some school supplies for the Iraqi children through an organization, too. It seems like it is also a morale booster for the troops to help kids in particular. That is one thing my brother mentioned when he got back. Does anyone have any experience with this?

This is the site I found for that: http://www.iraqischools.com/

As a mom of a Marine I want to thank you for your loving support of our troops whether or not you agree with the politics of this war.

as an army wife and army brat, no problem! and I always will.
All the soldiers should be supported in spite of differing political views !!!!!!!

THanks for posting this !

If anyone can find more links that would be cool,

I belong to a German Shepherd web board & occasionally we get requests for the toys/treats for the soldier's K9's.
Thank you so much for posting this link. I had no idea about this and I've wanted to do something for our heroes. This is something I can definitely do! Being a bookaholic myself, it's right up my ally and they even say you can send beanie babies for the kids in Iraq. That's great!
