My friend just tested positive for group B strep. She is 2 weeks pre-due-date. She reallly doesnt want to take antibiotics if she tests + again at labor. I thought maybe a nightly insertion of yogurt mixed with probiotic powder (in addition to oral probiotics) might outcompete the strep. What do you think and/or know about how to get rid of it?

Ideally she'd do it with homemade yogurt, but since she doesnt have a maker, is store-bought ok, or too sugary?

Oh yeah, and how much powder/how many pills would you put in the yogurt per night?

Thanks!!

Personally, I'd go with a garlic clove, but perhaps some other mamas have different opinions.

Make sure the store yogurt is plain, with no sugars.

Natren recommends 2 gelatin acidophilus capsules/day, one AM, one PM. Gelatin dissolves more easily than cellulose caps. They have a product called GyNatren but it's being "reformulated" don't know what that means.
http://www.natren.com/pages/urinarytract.html

Or I imagine you could get acidophilus powder and mix it with yogurt to make a paste for a boost too... insert with a plunger.

I would give bifidobacteria to infant asap (as in first feeding) after it is born to make sure healthy bacteria colonize. More in post #20 of HTG Cheat Sheet.

I would second the rec for garlic -- just makes sense -- as well as probiotics orally and vaginally. Kill the bad, replenish the good. I hope it goes well.
