Had to go to the hospital last night...

We were in a car accident and I had to go to be checked out. I spent 2 hours there, most of it lying in a bed hooked up to EFM, and got an ultrasound to check placental adhesion and amniotic fluid pockets. Good news is baby is fine. But my word, I've never been so grateful that I have birth choice... the hospital was positively medieval!

It was a row of cubbies, separated by curtains, with a bed and foldout wall TV in each one. No room to walk around, no room to labor comfortably out of bed.
: You have to change out of your own clothing and remain hooked up to monitors. Nurses or any other kind of humans are nowhere in sight thanks to the curtains. And children aren't allowed to be with their moms. My DD was understandably quite pissed off to be made to wait in the lobby with DH.

I don't know how women deliver there. Every other woman there was of color and stuck in a bed. It made me so sad.

I'm so glad you and your baby are ok!!! You're right hospitals are pretty icky....glad you didn't have to stay there!!!
I'm glad that you and the babe checked out ok. That, in my opinion, is what hospitals are for, the extenuating circumstances, not normal birth.

I'm not sure what you are saying here? Perhaps you might want to clarify as I hope you don't mean anything racist...

Sounds more like she's saying the *hospital* is the one with the problem, treating the women like that. In the absence of diversity, it usually means there's a better choice somewhere for other folks, whatever that division may be -- socioeconomic, religious, racial. . . .

Glad to hear you're ok! I was rear-ended at 34 weeks pregnant with my daughter and had to be monitored for a day or so. Scary, scary. But like a pp said, that's what hospitals are for and thank goodness.
If you knew me or had met my family you wouldn't be thinking this way... kind of silly to accuse a family of color of racism

ding, earthmama, you hit the nail on the head. Other, more affluent women are probably going to chichi hospitals in more affluent parts of town. This just happened to be a downtown hospital and the one where I got sent. I hope that statement puts this part of the discussion to rest.

I am so sorry for the misunderstanding.
Unfortunately, I'm related to an ob nurse who regularly spouts off about...well, I won't further her hatred here. But when I read your post, it came out to me in her voice. Again - I'm very sorry for my misunderstanding.

How are you and the babe doing today? You might want to try a chiro visit if you're feeling out of whack at all, it can really help w/alignment this late in the game. Heck - I might go for one no matter what.

Don't worry, Em, I'm not offended.
Thanks for the rec to go visit my chiro - my lower back is twingeing a bit, so I think I'll be heading up there today.

Every time I visit the hospital I think, wow, it's a wonder anyone gets born any more. Hospitals are so medieval. Even the chichi ones.

So glad you and your baby are ok.

glad you are ok- glad you are homebirthing!!!!!
I know exactly what you mean. I had to go to a hospital yesterday for bleeding and contrax. I was in L&D. Its not that it was a bad hospital or anything, actually it looked like they TRIED to make it somewhat more comfortable... BUT it made me sooooo glad I don't give birth in hospitals! They put me in an exam room in the gown and all that, hooked me up to EFM and disappeared for long periods of time, only coming in to put the monitor back in the right place (baby kept punching it off
) and to run tests. I would have gone crazy if dh weren't there, and I can't imagine I could have had any kind of a positive birth experience there.
