dh (age 26) used LSD about 10 years ago. It was slipped in his drink as a joke so he has no idea of how much he took. Ever since then he gets these spells where he has hallucinations. Sometimes all his senses are affected, sometimes less. They used to last a while, but now they are only an hour or so. They used to be frequent, but now he only has 1 or 2 a year. Also, the severity seems a bit less, by that I mean that he can understand what I'm saying to him during an episode even though he can't respond well. It is hard to describe. He has mentioned it to the doctor but never went back. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, or any info in general on the topic. TIA.
Sounds pretty scary! I'm glad he's doing better, though. I'd definitely follow up with the doctor, though, just to be on the safe side. I'd want to make absolutely sure that he doesn't have any neurological, metabolic, or psychiatric problems that could get worse with time. Good luck!

I think it's unlikely that one dose of LSD, ten years ago, is causing his problems, but if that's what he thinks then I believe him.

In any case, whether or not that was the original cause, whatever is going on with him is due to current neurological glitches of some kind (because the LSD left his body a long, long time ago and if it hadn't permanently affected his nervous system, this would not keep happening.) He really should be checked out (EEG, brain scans) to see what's going on. Honestly, it could be a seizure disorder (seizures come in many forms) or a brain tumor or who knows what. Maybe the drug triggered something neurological that was in him just waiting for a trigger, but he'd have to have been susceptible to it with a "weak link" somewhere (IMO, no offense intended).

How often does it happen?

I went on a month long acid binge back in 1999 and it did seem to have lasting effects. I can't drive through certain parts of town without having flashbacks and sometimes I hallucinate for no reason. I do have bipolar disorder (that's what led me to the LSD in the first place--mania), but I had it before the acid and only had one or two hallucinations and they happened while I was manic. Now I sometimes have them out of the blue when I'm feeling "normal".

I seriously doubt one hit that long ago would be causing anything now, though.

Thanks for the responses!! I always felt pretty alone with all this, it's not something you tend to bring up in conversation!!

Let's see:
We have seen no one except our FP who said we should make an apt. to discuss it (I had asked at one of my prenatals). Needless to say, dh never did.

His brother does have a form of epilepsy that was diagnosed around age 7.

They used to be frequent but has had only 1 in the past year or so.

I have read a little about it, and while I get no clear answers, some studies seem to suggest that any amount of LSD (especially if it was mixed with something else - and he has no way of knowing) can change the brain permanently. It just seems so weird.

He thinks the LSD did it cuz he never had problems before and had problems after. That being said, my dh was a wild child and spent his teen years partying in every way, with the exception of drug use (except for this incident). However, who knows what he did when he was too drunk to remember, or what others did when he was passed out.

Sometimes it is as little as seeing a moose cross the road (we live in southcentral PA - no moose here!) and other times it is feeling that he is on fire, that the girls and I are dead and laying next to him, that things are attacking him. Or sometimes it's as simple as seeing vivid colors everywhere, like neon pink butterflies flying around. This is over the course of 7 years, which is as long as I've known him. He always gets really tired afterward and sleeps, then wakes up totally fine. I wonder if they could be triggered by stress?

All I can add is that I used mushrooms more than a few times (maybe 8 times total?) when I was about 16. The last time I did it, I continued to see "trails" and small things like that after I sobered up and for about another four years after. It finally just went away recently. All the books and specialists told me that it's not possible for that to happen (shrooms should clear right out of you like alcohol does). But obviously it was happening and I know what and when it was from. I have no advice on how to treat it. Just wanted to add that it very well could be from the drug (though I have no idea) and not to let people make him feel crazy or dumb over it because it's "not possible". Maybe he'll luck out to and it will just dissapear finally like it did with me? Good luck

My oldest friend has done over 500 hits of acid. With no flashbacks. (I just called him to ask) He is also an MD. (ya I know, we all tease him) His comment was the LSD has never come back to haunt him, but it is very common for people with Bipolar disorder to have hallucinations when manic.

He suggested getting him in to a Psychologist, and going from there.

A friend of mine has had after experiences from LSD.
Like colours jumping out at her, so she has to move her head. She definately was affected by it in a flashback kind of way.
