Hello,

I am moving to the Hampton Roads area in a couple of months (living in Hampton), and I am in need of some help.

I will be 10.5 weeks pregnant when we move and need an OB recommendation. I am very high risk so homebirth is not an option for me. Would like to find a practice of caring, competent OB's--I hope it's possible. If they also work with CNM's that might be a good option for me too, but I probably will not be able to stay with a midwife the whole time so need to trust the OB's.

Also need a pediatrician for my son (3) and for the baby, of course. I need someone who is very pro-breastfeeding. We use a nurse practitioner at our ped's office primarily right now and just love her.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hi. Welcome to the area.

I was high-risk, too, but I was able to use the Midwives at DePaul for my son's birth more that 1 year ago. DON'T do that if you can help it!! I ended up with an unnecessary 2nd C-section!!

I joined Attachment Parenting of Hampton Roads (under meetup.com they're Attachment Parenting/Natural Living of Tidewater). There I got a recommendation for an OB/GYN in Chesapeake (not too far from Hampton- about 20 minutes depending on traffic) who is excellent!!! I haven't had a baby with her, but my AP friend did & she was very happy. I am now using her for my regular GYN & she inserted my IUD (which I highly recommend for anyone who isn't actively trying to get prego, btw). I really like her a lot. Her name is Dr. Thibodeau at Churchland OB/GYN. She's fairly young (like mid-thirties maybe), and VERY friendly. She actually sat down with my husband & me and talked about all the options- told me all the side effects of each option & why she recommends one over another, etc. Very much better than any other doc I've been to here (I've tried out several). So that's my recommendation. Here's her info:

Churchland Obstetrics & Gynecology
3802 Poplar Hill Road, Suite C
Chesapeake VA 23321
If you end up going to her please keep me posted as to how you like her since I'll need to decide about an OB for my next pregnancy (in another year or so). GOOD LUCK!!

I almost forgot to add about the pediatrician! I love my ped! I use CHKD / Newport News Pediatrics. We liked Dr. Chen because she's really personable & she remembers small things about us (like that I'm an audiologist & I know about ear infections, etc.), but all the doc's there are great. They're very pro-bfing. They have TWO (count them, 2) lactation consultants who are fabulous!! They'll call you & come out to see you & help you fit nursing bras & sell you pumps... The nurses & docs are pretty good, too, about supporting nursing- I've nursed Nathan through every one of our visits & nobody has looked twice. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much!! I will certainly keep her in mind. If anyone else knows of anyone closer I would love to hear about them, but I certainly will travel if necessary to get good care. Thanks again!

Yallina- how is that ped about delayed vax?

Also I did go to Dr Valentine obgyn while i was there and they have 2 CNMs and a nurse practitioner. They were very understanding of my wishes about not wanting to do prenatal testing but I moved before I had my baby so I can't say how they are with birth. this is in vb.

i've heard mixed things about the birth center in norfolk. the requirements are pretty strict to birth there, they dont take my insurance, and they are adamant about certain prenatal testing.
