I read a few chapters about it while browsing in a book store and I'm intrigued. It seems like a really great idea... and yet the thought of waking up lying a pool of pee doesn't sound so great

I'm sure I could try some kind of modified version if it turned out to be too impractical.
I haven't read the whole book though. I'm sure they address sleeping and traveling (and how to clean poop off of upholstery
) and all of those complications that I'm worried about.
But before I run off and buy it, I was just curious....
Anyone have experiences with EC? Good? Bad? Challenging?
Anyone going to try it out with this baby?

I haven't done ECing before but I plan to with this babe. I have a number of friends who have had varying degrees of success with it and for the most part it sounds like a great thing. We've got a local support group with monthly meetings and I plan to start attending soon so I can figure it all out.

You can do it part time to. A friend of mine does it with her nb, who is now about 6 weeks old and she has only changed 1 pooey diaper. Heck, Ill change the pee one's, but it would be great to avoid the other!

I did it last time with ds. He was totally diaper free by 7 months. Of course, we still had some 'misses' here and there, but less cleanup than changing diapers all the time.

This time around, it'll be a bit more part time. This is because I'll be working (taking baby with me most of the time) and occasionally attending births, and I know it'll be less stressful on dh if baby is diapered when he's with baby alone. He'll offer the potty as needed, though.

I highly recommend reading a few books on EC and if you have a monthly support meeting near you, go!

I think it depends on the child. I had a friend who did it with her DD (same age as my DD) from the get go. However, my DD was wearing underwear full time successfully a few months before her DD was. (BTW, my DD began wearing underwear full time shortly after her 2nd b-day.)

I was much better with dd1 than dd2 with ecing. I started when she started eating solids and her signs for pooping became clear with squirming and grunting. That was right around 6 months. With dd2, it is hit or miss. I get at least 1 poop a day on the toilet, but I am not as focused on her as I was able to be with dd1. It sure does make the cloth diapering more pleasant with only wet ones.

I thought it was completely insane (something only 100% crazy people on MDC did), then ended up trying it, loved it, and we won't ever diaper a child. I'm actually looking forward to getting to do it again with a second child!

I don't personally have experience with this, but I have heard of others whose nannys have done it. I don't see why not. They'd be changing diapers anyways! I can see how it wouldn't work if it was a day care setting, but if its a nanny just watching your kids, I don't think it'd be a problem!

I did a late-start version of EC- started at about 10?mos? casually, and we were 100% (nights too) done with diapers by 20 mo. could have been earlier, but I chickened out.

So yea. I will be doing the whole late-start thing again, and maybe start earlier.. we'll see!

We did EC from 3 weeks or so w/dd1, and from birth w/dd2. I don't think we could not EC at this point.

I've never woken up in a pool of pee.

We use diaper back-up, usually coverless kissaluvs.

Just curious: which book are you looking at? I've only ever read Diaper Free, but it's great!

We went EC at like 9 months! DS has been 100% dry at night since one year!
: We plan to do MORE EC with this next baby! I think being aware and able to see/touch their genitals leads to earlier potty learning even w/o EC per se! Diaper free baby forever!

That's the one I was looking at. I think I'll go ahead and get it.

sry to crash your ddc... but wanted to say two things.

1. I was a nanny... i would have EC'd i am sure if you talk to your nanny about it she would do it. i would hesitate to hire one that would say no...since i think its just rude to say no if someone paying you lol.i did crazier things than that as a nanny (one of the dogs would get poo stuck and you had to pull it out before she would come in the house. happened on the first day i worked there
)

2. check out the EC forum if you haven't yet

Our sitter is totally into it. DD was PT'd by the time we moved here and found her, but the sitter is so proud of how she's so young and so independent wrt pottying, that she said she'd be up for trying it when she watches the little one next year. So it's possible! Even if you do it PT, or only for poops or something, the earlier you start the better, and you'll be glad you did. So even if the nanny doesn't want to, it's still worth doing.

The point for us is not to go totally diaper free, it's just for the kid to know that the normal place to put potty is in the toilet, but wet diapers happen. Plus if you only do it for poops even, it makes those first messy poops WAAAAAY less messy, and you'll be glad that you poop-EC'd b/c you won't be changing poopy diapers for 3+ years.

Thanks for the advice and experiences everyone! I know it's a little ways off, but I'm kind of excited to try this out

It worked great during my maternity leave...I'm not sure if it was the age or the fact that I was home with him--we drove a 5hr car trip when he was 12wks and only made one stop (dry dipe, peed in the potty) and he was dry when we got to the hotel! I went back to work for 2mos or so before staying home again and did not EC...once I was home we tried and he screamed so we stopped. He's 19mos right now and he likes to sit on the potty, but, he won't pee or poo in it the majority of the time (he doesn't sit long enough lol). I'm probably working FT again (with NO maternity leave if I get he job I'm applying for--eeek! So we won't do it this time). If I were staying home I would do it for sure.
