Last Friday night, my 10 yo DD was running in the house and stubbed her big toe into a door frame. She still could not put any weight on it Monday morning and it was still swollen and bruised so I took her to the pediatrician. He did an x-ray and did not see any broken bones but he thinks she chipped the growth plate?, which I guess doesn't show up on x-rays. Anyway, he taped the big toe to the toe next to it and gave her a surgical shoe to wear. He said she should just go by her pain level of when to stop wearing the shoe, start running around, etc.

She is doing fine walking around in the shoe but obviously cannot play soccer or do ballet. Anyone have an idea of when she might be able to go back to those activities? Another week? A couple more weeks?

I would think a couple weeks at the speed that children heal at. I did the exact same thing to my big toe at the very beginning of March. X-rays didn't pick up anything but it was swollen and blue for weeks. It is still sore and I'm limping around somewhat, but shoes started feeling somewhat comfy about 2 weeks ago, and I can actually bend my toe now.
: Course children much faster then we do, if she isn't wanting to do ballet in 2 weeks then I'd be surprised. My DD2 broke her clavicle in Feb, 2-3 weeks later it was all I could do to keep her from trying out the bars at the gymnastics center.

Thanks! Hopefully it will only be a couple more weeks.

Sorry your big toe is still sore! I had bunion surgery on my left big toe on March 10 so believe me, I can sympathize. Although it's feeling pretty good by now. Just feels kind of "stiff."

I could walk around on my pinky toe after it was broken and having shoes on was fine. It was just if I put pressure on it the wrong way that made it hurt. I have to say, it is still crooked and is uncomfortable sometimes like there is still something out of place.
