A couple weeks ago my little toe started to itch. I thought it was a blister from my new shoes. A week later, it seemed to be a little swollen. Now it is huge and red, and the symptom has spread to the next toe and is moving on. There is no wound, no visible bite, I have no recollection of hurting it at all! Has anyone ever had an infection like this? I don't have a doctor; I am trying to figure out how to proceed.

Any time you have an opening in your skin, there is the potential for bacteria to enter and grow. I don't want to alarm you, but this summer, the husband of one of my closest friends was hospitalized with a rash of unknown origin, a fever over 103, and severe flu-like symptoms. After days on IV antibiotics that were not working, it tok multiple infectious disease specialists to diagnose him with a staph infection. Thank goodness, he was ultimately cured. But there was a period of time when the doctors thought he might not be. His doctor says that he was infected through a previous cut in his skin, which could have been as small as a pimple or INGROWN HAIR!! So, any small tear in your skin could serve as the entryway for a slew of bacteria. I would err on the side of caution with this one and get it checked out. (And, I'm not a doctor-going person under many casual circumstances.)

I agree! You can get it swabbed to check for MRSA or other things. You don't want to mess around with something like that if it's still spreading and not getting better.

Thanks for your help. It is staph. I hope not MRSA. I am treating with homeopathics but the doc is also an RN so she gave me a back up scrip if this doesn't do the trick. I am kind of frightened.

I am just going thru this with my dd 2. She always sucked her thumb and apparantly somehow there was a cut or something and then her entire top of her thumb became infected. I tried everything to stop the infection. Nothing worked and the the thumb was getting hugely infected, and was also loooking **** it was spreadsign to one of her other fingers that had a scrape around the cuticle. As a last resort, I had to put her on antibiotics, as it was a staph infection. I had also been battling impetigo woth ther, also a kind of staph infection. I think she caught it on acruise we went on earlier this summer. Any, you do not want to mess with staph... Can get serious very fast. Good luck to you. SHe was diagnosed with paronychia.
