I'm just wanting to run an informal poll to see how common diaper stink is. Feel free to elaborate, for example: How long you have been cding, your wash routine, what types of diapers you use, which fabrics, etc...

I have only ever had diaper stink wit hhemp, no matter how it was washed, dried, no matter the detergent or stripping or adding TTO. I gave up hemp loooooooooong ago and just use sherpa and organics.

I have had build up a few times, but never to the point of stink until the last few days. I managed to get rid of it, but it took a lot of hot washes and I resorted to a small amount of bleach.

I must admit, it has me scared. Not that I would ever switch to sposies, but I don't want to battle stink : I've been using Tide for months now and am thinking maybe I should switch detergents. Everyone has an opinion on what's best, so I have no idea what to switch too. I may try sportswash which seems pretty popular.

I would love to hear more about your wash routine. How much of each do you use? What types of washes/rinses do you do?

I use *such* a small amount of Tide and still get build up. I can get rid of it with a small amount of stripping, but its still a PITA.

I had some serious stink issues a while back. The biggest thing that helped get rid of it was adding lots of extra water to my front loader. I was also using way to much soap. Now I use about a tablespoon of powdered degergent and I'm good to go. Here's my routine.

1. Long cold rinse. Nothing but extra water added.
2. Hot wash, second rinse. Tbsp Tide HE powder, and extra water.
3. Cold rinse with BS, TTO, vinegar, and extra water.
4. And every three of four washes if I see a little sudsing in the final rinse I will do one more extra rinse to get things nice and clean with extra water only.

Haven't had ANY stink in months!!

ohh right, when I had a FL I did a soak and let the dipes soak a minute or 2 then cancel the soak, it did NOT spin just drained, then did the HOT wash... this did the same thing as adding water to the wash... the diapers are already full of water so they wont soak up the water for the wash and get cleaner

I chose, "yes but I can always get rid of it", although I really wouldn't say we had stink....just a mild musty odor from time-to-time.

My cure? BAC-OUT! Oh yeah, and we use TTO with some hot washes and that really freshens things up too.

Yup, had that stink.

yeck.

The worst was using pockets with the MOE microfiber inserts. The just held onto the poop stink (and stains...no matter how I soaked) so I stopped using them.

Recently we had stink in the hemp. So I cranked up the hot water heater (sorry DH for the gas bill ) washed with baking soda, vinegar and rinsed in hot for the entire day. I justified it by not having a shower :LOL And switched detergents from Tide to one without enzymes (purex).

MUUUUCHHH better. For now. But DD's poops reek to high heaven, so I expect stink again. She poops in the pockets in the car on outings then the diapers sit in the car for a bit (as we usually change in the car) so the smell soaks in :LOL

ETA: DD is sensitive to TTO so we don't use it. I use it on the towels and bibs tho....works great. Just gives DD a rashe if I use it on diapers or in the wipes solution

I've only had stink from one hemp insert/diaper I got off the TP. It was horrific - now I know how bad it could be (if you're a Seinfeld fan, I liken it to the rampant BO that wouldn't die). I then stripped everything with Sportswash, then long hot washes with my Arm & Hammer Fabricare, with a little Calgon in one of the washes. I haven't had any stink problems with my own stuff, just that one thing. I also have pretty hard water.

Been CD'ing since March 2004.
Wash routine: Cold pre-wash, long hot wash with A&H Fabricare and extra rinse. If I feel like it, I do another rinse. Then toss in dryer.
Diaper make-up: Prefolds, some hemp inserts, Sugarpeas, Daisy Doodles.

I have very, very hard water here. I switched to sportwash for the dipes, and I also switched my routine up a bit. Now I have very little problems with stink. When I smell a slight stink problem, I add an extra hot wash.

This is my routine, I have minishower, so all poopy dipes are sprayed off.
Cold wash with half cap of sportwash.
Hot wash with nothing added.
Extra rinse If I see bubbles.

The only time I really get stink is if I forget a diaper in the car or something and it sits way too long without washing. :

FBs are the worst, in my opinion for holding onto stink, esp poo smells. But I usually find using some TTO and then sunning them to dry gets rid of it totally.

My wash routine:

cold soak/prewash with baking soda and TTO
hot wash with 1-2 tblsp Purex
cold rinse

I've been doing this for about a year and a half now, with no problems. We have very hard water and a top loader.

You need another option. I'm pretty sure I had "diaper stink" about 4 years ago when my first babe was a babe in diapers. We lived in a different state and I vaguely remember dealing with stinky terrible diapers. I wasn't online at the time and thought it was just her potent pee, and somehow I managed to deal with it but I never really got rid of it. We didn't live there very long and when we moved here it was not an issue at all and has never been.

We've had LOTS of problems with stink due to hemp, hard water, and a FL.

Our current routine is - cold wash with 1 tsp BS and 1/2 cap Basic H, Hot wash with extra warm rinse with 1/2 cap Basic H and 1/2 cap Liquid L, and 3rd hot wash with nothing, occ a little Calgon. What really helped was adding extra water to my FL.

It does seem that I need to switch detergents periodically. And sportswash made the stink MUCH worse!
