My 11 mos. old son must have picked up a bug this week. Everyone around us has horrible sore throats and coughing. His only symptoms, though, are a fever and an inability to swallow his spit. (He's going through a bib every hour at least.) So, I'm assuming he has a sore throat and it just hurts to swallow. Today is definitely better than yesterday and he's nursing quite a bit. We've tried to check for mouth sores or a white throat, but he's pretty unwilling to cooperate. Looks ok, though, I think.

So, what do you do for a sore throat? I have a plant whose leaves I use to make a tea for us, but I'm reluctant to use on him. He's getting 200 mg. Vit C. I really don't know what else to do since this is the first throat probl. for either child.

Any advice/experience?
Thanks

I don't have any advice for you really.
Dd is almost the same age, but she never has had a problem like that. I just wanted to tell you to be on the lookout for epiglottitis, it is a staph or strep infection of the epiglottis, the soft tissue at the back of the mouth. It can swell and obstruct the airway. Don't be alarmed, but it is a serious condition. The reason I am posting about it, is inablility to swallow saliva is a symptom.

Quote:
This condition is more common in children than adults. When epiglottitis is caused by an infection, the person may have fever, severe sore throat, and drooling. There is often very noisy breathing when drawing in air. The harder the individual tries to breathe, the louder the breathing. Those with acute epiglottitis tend to lean forward and hold very still. This minimizes the obstruction. Epiglottitis is a true medical emergency in children and some adults.

If you feel like your son might have this, run, don't walk to the hospital, please!

If not, great! I hope your ds gets better! And the whole family, too!

NAK

I'm sorry your little guy is sick. If he isn't showing signs of dehydration or difficulty breathing, I'd just try to ease the discomfortt and maybe try some probiotics (goodpapa, where are you?). Could you make him some crushed ice (like a water slushie)?

Gotta run. GL
