I posted in the alergy section and now think I should have posted here?

Anyways, it looks like DS has a yeast infection.
I'm not sure how to deal with this going forward.
I was being pressured by the pharmacist where I picked up the meds to treat, that I should get him circ. right away to avoid this in the future (never gonna happen b.t.w.)
My son (he's about 4) is ALWAYS handling his penis. When he is sitting watching a cartoon - he's always got his hands in his pants. He is so fasinated with pulling back the ski and seeing it pop out. I cannot control this for the most part. I suspect having his hands touching everything and then handling himself caused the infection. Now I keep telling him "you can not touch your penis, because this is why you have an ouchie now".
As much as I don't want to paint a negative picture about his penis, the fact is, dealing with this infection is a REAL PAIN! I am just so aggravated with how messed up it looks, it is all red and just looks terrible. Anyways, right now we are treating it with warm epson salt baths and then an antifungal, and a cortizone cream.
Sorry, i'm rambling but I am curious if anyone else has had this experience and how they dealt with it.
Thanks.

I DEFINITELY would NOT say this.

You can make a rule about washing hands before touching penis. You can say that touching penis with dirty hands may cause infection which makes his penis ouchie.

I know what you are saying, but I just don't see any other way around it.
Of course I can tell him to wash his hands, but then what? Tell him not to touch anything prior to handling himself? Tell him to wash his hands every 5 minutes? If he really does have the infection because he keeps playing with him, then maybe I tell him that he can only do it in the bath.

I see what you're saying, mama and I totally 100% get it (so please don't think I don't). But there is always a price to pay for being extra careful. In this case I think that reducing your son's chances of getting yeast is NOT worth permanently messing up his brain with such messages (if you know what I mean). It just would have been too heavy price for me.

Moreover, I don't really think that him touching his penis (with occasional hand wash) is your problem. I mean, if he had yeast, then washing sheets, clothes with some anti-yeast stuff is a reasonable thing to do, but I would not go into obsessing over cleanliness. Most likely, it is his diet that triggers his yeast and not his hands. You need to eliminate sugars, white bread, limit bread and grains in general and also sweet fruit for some time, start him on GOOD probiotics daily (I'd say go 10 billions per day easily). Also, try to eliminate dairy and gluten for a while and see if this helps (dairy is an yeast trigger for many people).

I'm so sorry, I really don't have any helpful advice as my son has never had a yeast infection. But I hope your son feels better soon.

What I really want to ask is for you to pm me the name and number of that pharmacist. I think my eyes bugged out of my head when I read that statement. Did the pharmacist ask you if your son was intact? Can you imagine if you went to the pharmacy to get blood pressure and cholesterol meds only to be told by the pharmacist " you better cut out all foods with fat and salt and start exercising so you don't need these meds"? Or if you were a woman with a std and you went to pick up your antibiotic only to be told "if you wouldn't have sex you wouldn't need abx"????
I seriously want the phone number. I want to call and say my daughter has a yeast infection, the second one this year, and I need to get her circed. I'm going to ask the pharmacist if he/she can recommend a doc. to circ. my girl so we can avoid yeast inf.

(I never use that smilie but it seems appropriate for that pharmacists comment)

I'm sorry I don't know his name, but if you are geniunley serious, I will PM you the phone number and other details.
He also told me that I was the second person that day whose son had this problem. He said the other boy is 7 and that that is getting too old to be circ. but he also told that mother to look into having him done.
He told me my 4 year old is still a good age.
(All I had was this mental image of my son being chained too a bed in order to be able to carry out this procedure - and I felt my face go white).

That is just horrible that he'd give such aweful advices. Could you please go to the pharmacy and find out his name? I think his name should be brought to the attention to DOC AND Dave (the lawer) should send his pharmacy's boss a letter that they might be facing legal charges if he doesn't stop giving this horrible wrong advice. Think how many little boys get mutilated because of this aweful advice. This needs to stop!

OMG, how in the world this UA violation get away with giving such advice in CANADA???!!! (where circ rate is low and doctors know better than that).

I'm sure it still applies. DOC still can contact him (over the phone, email, letter) and Dave can still send them a letter.

What a UA violation! PLEASE PLEASE go to the pharmacy and get his name.

Sorry I am not familiar with the process (Dave?)
Is that a sticky in this forum (I think I read about that?)
Maybe PM me.

ETA: Ok I went trolling and found the email so I sent him an email asking if they will still send a letter to a Canadian. I'll come back if I hear from him and update you.

2nd ETA:
The email [email protected] is no longer working.

I never had to contact Dave myself, but I just opened a new thread about it and you should get some PMs about it.

As far as Doctors Opposing Circumcision, when you know the name of this pharmacist, you may want to bring it to their attention as well (maybe they will give him a call). Here is their contact info:

I got the same advice from two separate doctors in England. Just because they don't circ at birth doesn't mean the foreskin isn't expendable at the drop of a hat.

How sad

I wonder what they advise to circ'd boys with yeast? To cut the rest of the penis off?..

I honestly dont think him handling his penis is what caused the yeast. If that where the caase then all the boys on this board would have yeast infections. Now that he does have a yeast infection though he does need to wash his hands a lot and avoid touching if at all possible. Maybe tell him until it gets better that it needs to rest of something along those lines.

You can use OTC monistate of another yeast cream for woman be sure though to get the 7 day kind and use it exactly as directed or the yeast will flair up again.

I would bleach his undies or use something to kill the yeast there. I would look at his diet and remove as much sugar as possible yeast thrives on sugar. You would treat the yeast for him the same way you would for a girl.

I hope he gets better soon and I hope you do contact the pharmasist and let him know that he is dispensing bogus medical advice and if he recommends the same thing for his woman customers.

I would NOT use chlorine bleach, I remember reading that it triggers yeast badly. I'd boil the undies or soaked them in non-chlorine bleach and then wash them very well in the washer adding 20-30 Grapefruit Seed Extract drops in the water.

Yeah bleach isnt my first choice either I used that as an example because I didnt know what killed yeast I have never delt with it before.

When I used the word bleach I wasnt really thinking of chlorine bleach I was thinking about bleach as in killing germs and it sounded better than defungafy
GSE would be much better.

boiling sure does
. I'd boil them for about 20 min after washing, that will sure do.

Ironing would help too.

soaking them overnight in vinegar works too.
I'm furious for you mama!

Just treat it like you would a girl with a yeast infection (sadly, we know too much about them around here)...
It really has nothing to do with him touching himself with dirty hands (though now, he could spread thrush to his mouth if he plays then puts his fingers in his mouth)... just check out the thrush threads in Breastfeeding Challenges, lol. It's more about an imbalance of sugars or antibiotics.

Good grief...this is ridiculous.

I have a friend whose son is VERY MUCH circ'd and he's had recurrent yeast infections on his penis since he was about 6 months old and he's almost 2 now. He's been in and out of specialists offices his entire life because of it...what would they have recommended they removed to prevent THOSE infections? His entire penis?

(For that matter, I also have a couple of friends whose circ'd sons have also had UTIs...)

I suffer from recurrent yeast infections...my midwife suggested microwaving my cotton only panties for 30 seconds...so far so good.

Are pharmacists in Canada allowed to dispense medical advice? It's illegal here in the US. They can question medications and call docs with questions, but they can not recommend surgery.
