Ds is 9, with SPD and dyspraxia. His feet have just had a huge growth spurt, up into the range where it's next to impossible to find velcro shoes. (Size 7, in case you need to know.) Not only does he look like a puppy with those big feet, but I was very fearful because he couldn't tie shoes. He couldn't even start a week ago. (He also can't cut his own food, butter his bread or anything else requiring reasonable fine motor skills.)

He and dh worked about 10 minutes a day on tying shoes and 5 days later, he's got it!His laces are a bit loose, and he has to redo them a fair amount, but he can do it.

I don't know who gets the bigger kudos, ds for doggedly working on something that's very hard for him or dh who had the patience to walk him through this over and over again.

I totally get what a big deal this is! My sn DD learned to tie her shoes when she was 12.

Yay! That's fabulous! DD learned over the past year, but still dislikes it. Our solution (probably different with a boy)was to have her normal tying shoes for most of the time and some shoes with curly laces for times she's overwhelmed by tying. Less stigma than velcro, and easier to find.

http://www.shoelaces.ecrater.com/pro...hp?pid=5017363

Thanks for the link -- I think those laces might be useful at times. He did great yesterday (he even timed himself and got one shoe done in 22 seconds), but was having trouble this morning. I think he probably needs to slow down and focus a bit.
