My Dh works in Laurel, he is closer to the Columbia side. But we live in Woodbine in Carroll County. We actually just moved here in December, and it's pretty wide open and you can keep chickens (I don't know about newer developments, but we can, and it was built in the 80s) There are goats, horses, and sheep around us but we are still close to a lot of things.

I don't know any CSA yet, I just moved and haven't had time to explore too much around here. I know there are a few places locally in Carroll County though.

I live in Upper Marlboro, which is SE of DC. Depending on where you are in Laurel/Beltsville, it's probably about 30 minutes. There's alot of farm properties out here. We rent a farmhouse (3 bdrm 1 1/2 bath) for around $1250 a month, just to give you an idea of price. If you're renting, checking Craigslist might be a good way to find those "unique" places. For buying, there was a 1 bdrm bungalo about 1 mile down the road from us, had about 3 acres, and it sold for around $350,000. So that's kinda the price range around this area.

As for CSA, there is a place down here, called Clagett Farm. Here's the link.

BTW - Upper Marlboro's in PG county for schools. You can go a little ways north (maybe about 8 miles north on 301) and hit Anne Arundel county. That would be like the Crofton area. In general, I think if you move further east of that Baltimore/DC corridor, you'll have a better time finding a place with more room.

Good luck.

We're in Baltimore and we love Calvert Farms CSA. We pick up at the downtown farmer's market, but they have a number of delivery areas, so I'd check them out. We order pastured meats from a farmer in PA and are about to place our first order with Wagon Wheel Ranch, in Mt. Airy.

Maryland Sunrise Farm in Gambrills is organic and has a CSA. My MIL lives right next to the farm and we're splitting the CSA this year, so excited!

Gambrills is in AA Co so I think schools are pretty good. They're getting ready to build some green houses near my inlaws...off of rt 175 across from California Terrace. Forget the name. Something Preserve? I dunno.
Gambrills is nice because it has the farm, Davids Natural Market, a Country feed store and convenient access to rt 32, rt 97.

I know down here in D.C there's a bunch of CSAs...def use that localharvest.org site, it's a great one. I do know that most of the ones in this area sold out a month ago or so.
