I have some basic gut questions after having started to read the cheat sheet. I've seen the Healing the Gut tribe referenced so often that I came here to find it ... is there a current thread? I couldn't locate it.

Background: my dh (otherwise very healthy & very good TF eater by nature) developed eczema in college (12 years ago) and a continual mild cough about 2 years ago. Over the last year we eliminated all commercial cleaners, switched to Charlie's Soap & Allen's Naturally for clothes, went to gentle soap (and very little of it), water-only hair care, and natural oils & butters only for skin. IOW, all chemicals gone - I had hoped it would end his eczema, but the dry indoor inter air brought it back (although later than usual) in full-force. I started to look for food allergies.

Dd (9yo) was on low-dose prophylactic antibx for over 2 years while I tried to find a natural solution to her chronic UTIs that were refluxing up into her kidneys. Finally found one, but I'm concerned about the effects. She hasn't shown any yet.

Ds2 (3yo) had massive diaper rash his first 2 years of life (till I switched to cloth), sometimes raw, bleeding, awful stuff. I just yesterday connected this to the round after round I had of antibx starting when he was a year old for mastitis and many UTIs his first year (finally solved those naturally, too). He's a carbaholic. This all put together looks like cause & evidence of candida overgrowth to me, which from the cheat sheet, says WILL cause leaky gut.

So I'm thinking I'm going to put all of us (after all, I've been on countless rounds, too, and it's harmless treatment) on a few weeks of taking a clove of minced raw garlic (antifungal) half hour before dinner, & a probiotic food (we lacto-ferment) 15 min before. During those weeks, we'll avoid yeast bread, tapwater, & more than one or two pieces of fruit a day.

My questions are:
-the candida FAQ says to avoid all fermented products, yeast-containing breads, fungus (mushrooms), and possible mold-carriers (nuts, dried fruit, & cheese). Is this really necessary? I'm thinking with the billions of candida yeasts in the body, that eating some mushrooms or probiotic salsa would not contribute to the yeast issue, and that the probiotic whole foods would have an overall effect much more than purchasing a commercial probiotic. We can avoid bread, and I know many peanuts harbor mold, but what about almonds, pecans, ...? How about spices? They mention in just one place something about spices & mold.

-How do you get a gut permeability test? I saw the lactulose/mannitol challenge mentioned on one of the links.

Thank you so much for your wise, wise insight!

I have no idea but I want to know how you healed the chronic UTIs. I've been on antibiotics for 2 years and every 6 months the doc has me go off to see what happens, and I get another UTI within 3-4 days. I'll try anything at this point -- what's your cure?
Two things: prevention and natural remedies.

I found that the UTIs for me & her stemmed from things that "just don't belong there." Thinking through my experience, hers, and things that I've seen linked to UTI's by others, or possible common causes, I got: KY (my personal biggest cause; astroglide was even worse, and while reducing the amount helped, I still got occasional UTIs as long as I used any amount)), condoms, "toys", Monistat applicators, fecal matter (esp. an issue w/ children & diapers), maybe tampons, you get the picture. I use coconut oil instead of KY now (not only is it not contaminated, it's antimicrobial!). As long as I keep things out that don't belong, I don't even have to do the "urinate before and after" thing.

I also noticed that I was MUCH more likely to get and retain an infection when I had consumed a lot of, or regular, sweetened foods.

Natural remedies: whenever I feel the chills coming on (my sign that I'm getting either mastitis (if combined w/ breast soreness) or UTI (if combined w/ urinary pain or urgency)), I start taking probiotics (I do lacto-fermented foods or a cup of whole plain yogurt every day) & Vit. C (I do 6-8 packets Emergen-C, but I plan to switch to sodium ascorbate powder (not sweetened)). Garlic, too, if I remember or am really urgent (4 raw cloves, minced into OJ or V8 for me). And I cut out all sweeteners, refined, artificial, or otherwise.

IOW, I boost my immune system so it can fight off the invaders, rather than nuke them along with the whole town once they get inside the city walls. I went from numerous infections a year to, in the last year, 2-3 UTI & mastitis bouts that started, but fizzled in less than a day. I have had none that I can recall in the last 6 months and dd is totally infection-free.

HTH!

Anybody have any HTG thoughts for me?

Kathy I've found that at least for me, UTI's are very related to candida issues (which abx will worsen), same for sinus infections. When I treat my candida overgrowth my UTI/sinus infection will disappear. I used to take round after round of abx for my sinuses and they just got worse. No wonder.

NaturalCatholicMam sorry, I am just learning about gut healing myself. I do think that the things that need to be avoided tend to be individual though and you may have to figure out what your particular sensitivities are.

Giving you a bump because I have wondered about candida and fermented foods too. I want to do my own fermentation but I have yeast issues due to 10 years of Prednisone and antibiotics.

I found the cheat sheet, but have been looking for the forum as well, anyone know? I can't even seem to find past gut health tribe forum discussions, let alone current!

Not sure what you mean by a forum...The HTG sticky is in THIS forum and there was a support thread that was sort of slow going. Let me see if I can dig it up...

ETA bumped the HTG support thread...
