Hi! A loooong time ago I remember seeing a thread called this - or maybe it was a subforum? Not sure. I read quite a bit then, was quite confused, and our children have both been put on hypoallergenic formula when I couldn't figure out how to have them nurse and not have bloody/mucousy stools, extreme nursing refusal for the first when I kept trying for weeks on end - gave up after 14 days with my son; and severe colic for both. Both kids eat a rather full diet (no known/ID'd reactions) now, though I know DS is not digesting all he consumes, just from glances at his poop.

It's a SUPER emotional issue for me. What is wrong w/ my body that I haven't been able figure a way for my babies to nurse comfortably?

OK... I'm trying to not be overwhelmed by my problem. Part of the issue is that I don't even know WHAT is really wrong w/ me. Other than the nursing problems, I don't notice much allergic reaction or digestive problems in myself. But maybe some other things are related. I def had a sort of PPD after DS's birth; I attributed it to being depressed about nursing not working out... I sometimes have seasonal/environmental allergies, though I've not had bad enough in the past year that I've taken meds for them. I've made lots of improvements (Dear God, please let them be true improvements) in my diet and we are more of a "traditional foods" family now. Kefir, sauerkraut/fermented carrots... homemade yogurt, raw milk, grassfed and finished beef, pastured poultry... but I want to find that thread. I have joined the website run? by Pat - heal thyself, and don't know if I should pursue support there or here... or.... where? Of course, my mainstream PCP is not much help. My chiro, while kind and supportive, doesn't know what my/my kids' issues need. OOOOK. NOT going to go into overwhelmed mode. I'm not pregnant and want to address whatever possible so (if I'm blessed w/ a future pregnancy) newborn phase could be better - a baby not reacting to my milk, less "colic").

Anyone have a similar situation? "Gave up" (put that in quotes cuz I really didn't feel like there was an option, esp w/ our first, not sure if our 2nd really was headed the exact same direction) on nursing due to reactions to your milk?

I've wondered if my kids would be able to tolerate donor human milk better than my own... horrible thought in some ways but waaaaay better than formula!!! I know donors give milk for a mom who has production issues or health problems, but what about for a mom who makes "bad" milk?!

Thanks for any pointers - either specific advice or just different places to look for support in healing.

There were several healing the gut threads, I think in Health and Healing or Nutrition. If your babies were reacting to your diet, you have a leaky gut even if you don't have any other symptoms. Did you do a TED (total elimination diet)? I didn't give up nursing, but I gave up trying to figure out what ds's allergies were, and now I have a baby with what looks like eczema. Sigh. DS never had eczema, just congestion, diaper rashes, weird poops and chicken skin. Anyway, to you. Blood in stool is usually gluten, soy, or dairy. Had you eliminated the top 8 at least?
I don't think it's just "bad" milk, it sounds like your babies were super sensitive. Donor milk would have to be from moms who weren't eating what your babies were sensitive to.
There was a thread called "how not to have an allergic baby" in the Resources sticky. That's one to look at.
