As someone who is getting more senior, I definitely don't want to go through endless life prolonging medical treatment. On the other hand, I don't think I want a doctor to counsel me on what is basically an ethical, moral, quality of life situation. Doctors aren't necessarily the experts on those areas. A social worker or someone working with the elderly would be more helpful.

On a different topic, I saw the orthopedic surgeon yesterday and discussed getting my screws and metal panel out of my ankle. He explained why he counsels waiting. I told him that as a librarian I went digging for research on the topic of hardware removal and couldn't find any. He said, a bit bitterly, that there isn't any research on the topic, so it is a crapshoot and we have nothing but clinical judgment to depend on.

I appreciated his honesty.
