A couple of months ago I went through a website to determine good meta tags and redid my entire keywords/description etc. I had them all around 85% and up. It move my google ranking from 3 to 4. I check google ranking every day and it has never gone lower. So this morning I was a little irked to see that I had gone down to a ranking of 3. I figured maybe I needed to readjust my keywords or something so I opened up my source codes and discovered I had NO meta tags at all!!!

2 weeks ago my computer crashed and when i got it rebooted for whatever reason I no longer have notepad which is what I had been doing my html in. I started using wordpad and when I was updating my site and I saved it brought up a screen and asked if I wanted to save it as X thing, I did and it erased my codes so I got it back up as the origional and resaved it the other way, it must have erased all my meta tags though.

The pages I have changed have no meta tags anymore so I have to go through and fix all of those. I did find some pages I had not changed that had some of the meta tags on them. Thankfully it only took a few minutes instead of the several hours it took last time.

No wonder I lost google ranking, I am sooo glad I check it every day and I didn't lose more than just 1 ranking.

Wemoon, download the google toolbar here: http://toolbar.google.com/
Once you have it on your computer, you can look at it to see the Page Rank of each page.

speaking of google ranking...what does it mean exactly?
My homepage is always a 4, from what I can tell. Is that good or bad?

I am no expert on the topic by any means, but it is a ranking of the importance of your page. I know part of it has to do with how many other webpages link to your site. I'm sure there are other factors that go into determining your rank as well.

What I've read about it says anything at 4 or above is considered good.

Also, for you to get google credit for a backlink to your site, the page with your link has to have a PR of 4. You want your backlinks to come from quality sites, not link farms with low PR's.

It is good to have the toolbar on your screen because you get better ranking if you rank with sites that have pr of higher than 4, with the toolbar you can tell whether it's really worth it to link to sites or not. Lower ranked sites drag your ratings down.

Putting ads in classified or text/banner ads will help increase your ranking. I have heard that eBay auctions will help too.

The higher your ranking the earlier your site will show up when someone searched on your keywords. If you have a google ranking of 3 and another person has a similar site with the same keywords but has a google ranking of 5 their site will show up before yours does. If your site does not show up in the first 3 pages when someone does a search they most likely will not see it because they stop after 3 pages.

Something to keep in mind that PR is not the key thing that will raise you up in Google. Google likes content. The more content you have the better. Keyword density plays a big part. Google like a keyword density of about 2-8%. Any more, Google may consider spamming. Use your keywords in natural flowing sentences. Google likes backlink but limit your backlinks to relevent sites with a good PR like a PR of 4 or more. Google doesn't penalize you for lower backlinks but it won't pick them up. And you would have spent a lot of time acquiring those backlinks for nothing.
The main thing is patience. It took me 5 months to climb to #13 in Google for my main keyword. Then I had to start all over again. Google updates *about* once a month but it can take longer for them to pick up new content and backlinks. HTH!

I agree with all of that. PR helps you know if Google likes you or not.lol

I have had my site cached by google 2 times a month, the last 2 were 3 weeks apart(both on Tuesdays).

They also like it if you add to your site and show that it is an active site, having products on your site but not changing or adding anything doesn't help your ranking.

Just thought I'd offer these links for anyone who is interested in learning more about all of this. You can read through the message boards and learn a lot about how to optimize your website

http://www.webmasterworld.com
http://www.mymommybizboards.com/
http://www.internetbasedmoms.com/bb

That is quite normal that your home page be higher than your other pages. Although Meta tags are important, Google does not heavily rely on those. Again, the most important thing is content.

I have learned so much of this stuff from my host. They have a forum and I get a ton of tips from them.

For those using wahmshoppes, Google has a hard time indexing those pages as they are built using frames. I suggest creating html pages that link in and out of your site so Google has something to crawl and index.

If you like to chat here at Mothering, having a signature line helps, too. Google picks up the posts you make as a backlink!

Ah yes the siggy is important! I find it on goodle searches all the time. I guess whats important to me is where I place when I type in the keyowrds I'm aiming for. Like "Baby Sling" "adjustable Sling" ect. Right now I'm pretty satisfied with the results.

I just started noticing that my site is popping up on many many more search engines than I origionally submitted it to. Which is good! I think one of the main ones you need to get listed with is the open directory Search engine.
