Trying to be quick here - whiny sick toddler - DD is 2 and has what looks to be a nasty tummy bug. She is starting to get a bit better today - yesterday morning was bad. Of course she wants to comfort nurse, but I think she overloads her tummy and then all the milk comes back up. I have been giving her some pedialyte, per the Dr's orders, and now I called the nurse again, and she said to not nurse DD today, just to give pedialyte or some juice, and maybe applesauce or banana....HUH?

This goes against everything I have heard as far as breastmilk being so digestible, perfect food, etc. She said it would curdle in her stomach and cause her to vomit again. I really only think she was throwing up when she nursed too much, I think that it is that she can only handle a small amt of any fluid. i completely agree that cow's milk would not be good right now, but mine bad too?!?

Um, do I give any credence to what the nurse said, or go with my instinct?
DD is a bit dehydrated, not severely, but moderately, and she is begging to nurse, poor girl ( I do try to limit how long she nurses and space them out a bit to let things go thru.)thanks!

Breastmilk IS A CLEAR FLUID.....better than pedialyte (which has cornsyrup in it). The amount of milk that she's taking in at a time might be too much for her upset tummy, but she's absorbing some of it while she nurses.

thank you - glad to hear my instincts are sound. since i don't have a breast pump, not nursing for a day sounded bad from my perspective, too. i think i may have to shop for a crunchier dr's office. i thought it was simply because our other dr (who has now retired - he was great in all other respects but EBF) was old and old school, but it seems to be the attitude in most of that office. sheesh. Wait and see - next they'll tell me that I should've turned the baby FF in her carseat at one year....

That nurse is just trapped in a bottle-feeding mode of thinking in which sick tummy = pedialyte.

Breastmilk is best, you should definitely trust your instincts.

When my DD had a tummy bug, as difficult as it was, I just cut her off after a couple minutes so she didn't take too much in, until I knew she was handling it. Then offered a little more in a while. It was tough but worked.

I hate hate hate pedialyte. It's disgusting, just super expensive cool aid and salt. My son's first winter was wrought with bug after bug, and I was sick too. I was very dehydrated as well, so I needed to do something. I started drinking coconut water (from fresh young thai coconuts), and giving my son a few sips of it out of a spoon. It made all the difference. Turns out that is is the electrolytic equivalent of human blood plasma and it's sterile. My sister told me that people were given coconut I.V. in WWII direct from the seed itself. I started buying them from the Asian grocery store, but you can find them at Whole Foods and other places.

skip the pedialyte and nurse as much as she wants--don't limit at all. she will regulate herself, and even if she throws it up, it's no biggie.
