I need help desperately. I've co-slept with DD since birth and she's now 12 months old. I work at home at night and so can't stay in bed with her after she falls asleep. It's all worked pretty well so far.
But, in the last few weeks, she's gotten to be a crazy sleeper. She's fallen off the bed twice and last night she scared the crap out of me by getting her head stuck between the bed rail and the mattress.
For safety reasons, I think I have to put her in a crib. The transition is a nightmare though. She is hysterical in there of course, and I can't stand that. I've tried staying in the room with her, and that makes it worse.
She will fall asleep in there after 5 minutes of hysteria, but wakes up again about 20 minutes later and goes through it all again but for longer.

Help! I don't know what to do, but she has to be safe.

How about putting a mattress on the floor by the bed? I think, at her age, being hysterical over this change is pretty normal. My 13 month old would lose it if I tried that. I certainly understand your concerns though! I'd try getting her to sleep closer to the floor & moving her when I go to bed. Good luck!

we put our bed on the floor during this time with our first son. we haven't had to do that yet with our 18 mo since he doesn't move around so much.

it worked like a charm. he was able to get down if he woke up or if he did happen to fall, it was only a short roll instead of a 3 foot drop.

At 8 mos I moved our DS to his crib for naps and the first part of the night. At the same time though we put our mattress on the floor.

the crib transition was gradual. Lots of singing and rocking and all that. It took about an hour the first 2 nights (no tears though) and then it got easier. Now he's happy to go to sleep in there but even happier when I put him in his REAL bed around 10pm!

We also moved our 8 month old to his crib for the wiggle reason. He sleeps in there until his first night wake-up (usually between 12 and 2:30) and then we bring him to bed with us.
Thinking of you,
I know this part is hard.
We move our daugher around alot, if we're going to be in the living room and she falls asleep there, we just keep her with us until we go to bed. We also have our bed pretty safe, using the crib as a sidecare, then the siderail we took off as a safety gate for the bottom of the bed. I like the putting the bed on the floor idea also

Do whatever you need to make your bed safe- put it on the floor- whatever.

It seems pretty clear she still needs to sleep with you.

as everyone else has suggested, put the mattress on the floor! We moved ours to the floor when dd was 6 months old and just starting to be mobile.
