Help!! dd refused bottle, nipple suggestions?

624 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Tine
dd of 3 mos has only had two bottles in her life. once at about a month from grandma and then at about 6 weeks from dad. no problem on either occasion. both were avent newborn nipple that come with the asis pump package. well, last saturday mom had to work, left her with dad and she wouldn't take a bottle from him. i then tried to give it to her when i got back but no luck there either. don't know what's happening but looking at the nipple, after having boob, that nipple just isn't even close. it's too long in my opinion. when she was younger, we tried a couple of different pacifiers and the one she liked was a short kinda ergonomic Nuk brand. (she only used a couple of times when she was really tired and used it to go to sleep after nursing and still needing to suck and momma's boob just couldn't take anymore. now she loves her finger or fist)

So i'm thinking we might need to try another nipple and need help. Any recommendations on nipples to try? Dr. Sears book showed nubbin type and ergonomic type as options different from the one we have now but have no idea where I can buy some on line. I live in Costa Rica out in the boondocks so I need to order a couple of different ones on line if possible and have them shipped to a friend who is coming down in about 10 days otherwise it would mean a 4 hour trip to the big city and then hope that they have them. Please send all suggestions. Do all nipples fit on Avent bottles?

We're only going to need to use the bottle occasionally when I have to go out and meet with clients. Most of my work I can do from home. I'm worried b'c a friend told me that her dd refused bottle the entire time, only boobie worked for her. I really hope that's not the case. Any suggestions, input are greatly appreciated.

TIA!

My DD hated all bottles and pacifiers, until we tried this one - it's the soothie nipple. It's used in most major hospitals, given to babies that especially won't take to other bottles.

I will tell you, that some Mom's I have talked to found that there baby only used one type or another, and some babies hated this one too. I think that it's so particular per child that it's hard to recommend one that will definately work. I will say however, that this is highly recommended for babies that won't try anything else.
Before buying a new one, try adding more holes to the nipples. My kids all hated the newborn nipples. I usually go straight to 3m since the flow is more like the breast.
Thanks so much. I'm willing to try them all but this gets great reviews.
OMG, we had so many problems w/ our second baby. The first baby was pretty easy, but did prefer Avent bottles, so we bought only those (we needed bottles for daycare, 1/2 day, 5 days/week). Second comes along and HATES (and I mean HATES) the Avent. She has a very small mouth, the nipple was too big, and she would gag and them clamp her lips shut and that was it. So we tried a generic old gerber nipple (didn't work), the "Natural Latch" nipple (can't remember brand - also no go), Playtex (didn't work), Second Nature (didn't work), Evenflo...and I think a few others. The ones that finally worked were the Medela bottle/nipple and the Nuk nipple (almost identical to the Medela nipple). They have that weird angled bit on it - just like the Nuk paci's (also the only paci Claire likes). Unfortunately, as far as I know, the only nipples that work on the Avent bottles are the Avent ones, due to the wide mouth bottle (although perhaps the Natural latch one might also fit??). I just tried the Second Nature one and it didn't go on the Avent. Good luck, this is a hard one. Oh, and we only ever used the newborn nipple (as Avent says, it is closest to breast flow - e.g. my breast doesn't drip the moment I lean over, unlike a bottle nipple, LOL)!

just wanted to add that you can get an adapter for the avent bottles. I have a set of adapters so that I can used my Medela pump hooked up directly to my Avent bottles. The same adapter could be used to puy a medela nipple on the bottle. I found it by googling "Avent Medela adapter"
I'm going to try the Adiri Breastbottle with my son, a big-time artificial nipple refuser, when I go back to work.

I've had it recommended to me both here and by an acquaintence in real life.

I'll let you know how it goes...should be here in a few days!

Update:

Got it in the mail yesterday! My pump isn't working (rather, my boobs aren't working with my pump) so I haven't tried a feed yet...but last night my husband put it up to Ryo's mouth and he latched on just like it was me! Think we've got a winner!

Just a heads-up: be careful about using anything but a newborn nipple w/ a breastfed baby. It may cause them to develop a lazy suck, instead of the super-suction needed for BF.

My DD is a bottle-hater, too. We tried just about every nipple under the sun, and the Breastflow bottle by The First Years is the only one she'll take.
