Help! DD's diaper rash. TMI X-posted in Health and Healing

Background: My 14 month old dd just started eating a few bites of solids and actually swallowing them a few weeks ago. Then last week she had a really bad stomach bug where she threw up all day and ever since then has gone back to no solids. So the only food she is getting is breastmilk.

So, for the past few days, she has been getting a rash whenever she has a bowel movement. Yesterday it was really bad. It was all bumpy and red and she cried all day.
So I just changed her a lot and kept it dry, let her run around without her diaper some, etc. Last night she didn't poop at all and this morning, her rash was all but gone. It was still a little red, but looked almost normal. So, then I heard her poop. I ran to get a warm wash cloth and changed her. It was only against her skin for the time that it took me to go get the wash cloth. Her skin was all blistered and red. I know it's the poop that's doing it, because the skin around her anus is blistered the most. It doesn't help that she has been going every 20 minutes or so. With each bowel movement she has, the skin gets more blistered. Why is this happening all of the sudden? Why is her poop burning her skin? Could it have something to do with the stomach virus she had? Could she have developed a food allergy all of the sudden? But like I said earlier, she isn't eating solids, so the only food she is getting is what I eat through my milk. This is really painful for her. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i dont know what is causing the the rash but i will give you a few suggestions :)

Emma went through a phase were she kept getting yeast rashes and they would get red and blister and it was painful for me to even wipe her with a wet washcloth so what i would do is run water in the tub and stick her bum under the water to rinse her off......this is less painful for the baby and you will be rinsing off off the ickys and not just wiping them around (if it is a bacterial rash caused by something in her poop)

another thing i was told was to use corn starch powder (golds makes one that has cornstarch and zinc which works wonders) with every diaper change b/c it will pull the moisture away from her bum...so try powdering her up good after every diaper change...it will help pull all the water in the runny poop away from her bum....

and lastly try getting her to eat bread and stuff the will bind her up....maybe she just isn't getting enough solids?

Good luck i hope she feels better soon
Thanks for responding. I do think it's a yeast rash, but the only thing that helps is her not pooping. I have been alternating monistat and powder to keep it dry. It only clears up when she hasn't pooped in awhile. I don't think that it's because she isn't getting enough solids because she has never really gotten any solids. When she was eating it was only a couple bites per day. And she flat out refuses to eat now anyway. Sigh.
Diaper rashes are common during stomach viruses with diarrhea. I recommend something like Vitamin A&D ointment to protect her skin and frequent (daily) baths to wash off all the irritants for as long as she is having frequent bowel movements. Hope she feels better soon.
Run to your nearest drug store, Target, Walmart, whatever-- and get some Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It's a daiper ointment, and it's incredibly healing and fast-acting for yeast rashes and other rashes. If that doesn't give your DD some relief ASAP, then get ye to a doctor.

ITA.

The "Butt Paste" didn't work at all (for us). But, frequent baths helped when DS had rashes. We also had lots of naked time to air out. Although I don't like the smell of it, Desitin was also a miracle worker.
Well, in the past Desitin has always made her rashes worse. Her rash is a lot better today. She hasn't had a bm since yesterday, so hopefully it will be all better by tomorrow. If it comes back, I'll try the butt paste. Thanks.

My nephew has a wicked bad rash last week....I told SIL to put Burts Bees Wax diaper Ointment on him and it cleared that night. So there s another suggestion

Henry suffered from yeast rashes for the first 1 1/2 year, and the only thing that really worked for him was yogurt, lots and yogurt. Before he was on solids, I actually bought the probiotic powder at Sunflower Market (like Whole Foods) and put a T in his expressed milk or water. I started that at about 9 months, and it worked like a charm. When he started cow's milk at a year, I stuffed him full of full-fat plain yogurt, he would eat a cup a day, and no more rashes, it was great!
We like Aquaphor in our house for diaper rashes that won't heal. I slather it on super thick so that the poop is really only coming in contact w/ the Aquaphor rather than her bum. It's the only thing that helps for persistant diaper rash for us.
How long has it been since your baby had solids? I know when my dd had a reaction to cow's milk the first time we introduced it, it took about a week after we stopped giving her milk for her to get back to normal pooping, and longer for the rash to totally clear up.
