I need some help, I don't know much about tetanus. My almost 3 year old was bitten by our family dog pretty badly on the ear on Thursday evening. It required many stitches. Our dog is up to date on all her shots. Our son has never had any. I just started reading about how dog bites can cause tetanus to get into the body and that vaccines are recommended. Do any of you know more about this? The ER doctor didn't say anything about it, but the paperwork we took home did. So, I am not really sure if we should go and get this shot or not.

from what i have read here, tetanus only lives where there is no oxygen...so if the injury has been cleaned really well, and is watched, then there should be no issue...there is more info here...

peace...

Was the Dr. suggesting TIG or Dtap?

If they are recommending a "regular tetanus shot" It will make no difference with this injury and is just a chance to jab your child while they can.

TIG on the other hand is more like an antidote for a current infection.

Find out what they are suggesting.

Hope the babe is feeling better!!

I wouldnt even think about it either. I think as long as the wound has been cleaned and you keep an eye on it, you should be fine...

ditto for me... I would not worry about it either.

As for the handout recommendations, remember these are the same people that are pushing flu shots and Gardasil, so don't worry too much about that. Follow common sense and your gut and you'll do just fine and so will your dc.

Thank you everyone for your answers. His wound did a whole lot of bleeding and actually still bleeds quite a bit even with the stitches, so I guess that means oxygen can get at it pretty well. So far we have no signs of any infections and he should be able to get all his stitches out on Tuesday. We have decided to not do a vaccine at this point and we feel pretty comfortable with that now. Thanks so much.
