I have a wonderful friend who is having such an issue this time with brestfeeding...her first, it was like magic..this time....she's got more supply than she knows what to do with, a baby constantly hungry bc of all the foremilk despite the block nursing....

Her LC is telling her not to pump bc it will build the supply bigger and to hand express for comfort...

Her PED is telling her to pump after feeding and when she does...her dd will nurse for about 30 minutes and then stop, not want the other side so she will pump it and get 12oz from the just nursed on side and 8 from the non nursed side...

And she wrote this today:

"Went to dd'sweigh in and I am very upset right now. Since Monday she has gained ZERO yes ZERO weight. She is exactly where she was on Monday. So at this point the LC is at a TOTAL and complete loss for what is going on since my body is just not responding to the DO NOT produce more milk signs and still making way too much foremilk. At this point she has told me I need to go back to pumping and feeding the BM in bottles until we can get this figured out. So I am totally bummed and upset about all this, mostly because I feel like I am making it worse for her by trying to make her BF...... I am just well at a loss. So I am back to pumping (fun!) and have to go back Monday. She is going to do some research and call some other LC's to see/get their opinions as the two there just have no clue what is going on!! To top it off the blood pressure meds I am still on until my PP check up on the 14th actually have history of causing LOW milk supply... can you believe that!

Any ideas to help her out...I've done what I can, directed her to where I could....just out of ideas....I wish she lived closer...

How long was she block feeding for? I'm having some fore/hind milk imbalance issues, and was surprised that our ideal block is 5-6 hours on each side. Has your friend contacted LLL to get more advice? A leader might have more ideas, too.

she's going 8-9 hours on one side....and nursing until the baby stops...then puts her back on after a few minutes....

i thought she may have a forceful let down which may have been hindering things but she's not...she said she can feel let down (i never did) and it's not spraying....

her latch is great according to the LC she's seen...

I don't know if she's contacted an LLL rep yet.....it's just enough to get out of the house with the new baby and 2.5yo at the moment...

she's just down....

found this on kelly mom -

some of the descriptions on how it works are interesting. Is she switching sides or still block nursing?

This is a great article from LLL - read down into it and it discusses foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

Sounds like according to this, if she were to decrease her milk supply she would have some dramatic changes.

Quote:
Some mothers find that taking an antihistamine and/or drinking Sage Tea or using the herb, Peppermint, helps reduce milk supply.
