My friend has a 4 and a half month old boy, exclusively breastfed, and they've been having trouble lately.

It all started about 3 weeks or so ago. He had been sleeping through the night, suddenly stopped. Got increasingly fussy, uncomfortable, has been refusing the breast during the day. Will only nurse at night when they manage to get him half asleep. But he wakes up very, very often crying in discomfort. Legs sticking straight up in the air. His stools have been mucousy with blood in them.

She's been to a GI specialist. They put him on Zantac in case it was reflux. They think maybe it's allergic collitis. She's been on an elimination diet for 11 days (only eating rice, chicken, some veggies, some fruit), with no improvement. After talking with the doctor again today, they are going to try some formula for a couple of days while she pumps to try and rule in/out allergies. She's going to see a homeopath tomorrow.

She's exhausted, stressed, worried and I'm really concerned for them. And on top of it all they are going overseas on Friday to visit in-laws, so she's not sure how to handle diet, pumping, formula, breastfeeding, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I'd really appreciate it!
