Hello,

I just found out that I am expecting #2. I would like to have the baby in a birthing center or hospital birthing center with a midwife. My dd was a natural midwife assisted birth in a hospital. Can anyone pass on any reccomendations? I had my dd in Wisconsin and I don't have any friends who have children out here in PDX, so I really need some input. Thanks so much,
Hey Heidi,

First off, congratulations on your pregnancy! What an exciting time for you and your family. I had my first son at Alma birthing center, almamidwifery.com and am using the same midwife there, mellisa magnus gordon, for our second son who will be born at home sometime in june.

Alma is a great birth center, they have two birthing suites right now with amazing birth tubs and are adding there third as we speak. I cant say enough good things about them. Check out there website and schedule a tour and talk with the midwife, its free!

Good luck to you mama!

I used the midwives at Legacy Midwifery Emanual. Some are better than others - because it's a clinic, you see them, not any one in particular. I had to be induced due to pre-eclampsia, but they respected my desire to go as natural as possible - even after 2+ days, they weren't pushing epidural or c-section, and DS was born 64 hours after the induction started. I did have to push back on some medical stuff during pre-natal care (like testing for GD...) but they were always respectful of the fact that I was educated and knew what I wanted.

What part of town do you live in? If you are in SW, I just gave birth at St. Vincent's with the midwives from Women's Healthcare Associates. It was nice, I posted more details on the thread about St. Vincent's. I started out seeing the midwives at OHSU, and the clinic there is nicer but there are so many midwives that I found it hard to be able to meet all of them, and it was important to me to know the person who was attending the delivery. I wanted to give birth at the Andaluz Birth Center in Tualatin but my husband was not cool with it so we stuck with the hospital.

OHSU allows waterbirths, and is very open to midwives and alternative support

Legacy Emmanual is also water friendly for laboring although does not advertise waterbirths...

Legacy Good Samaritan also is water friendly like Emmanuel

I'd definitely recommend Alma as well. Laura Erickson is a fabulous midwife . It's a real independently run birth center

I just had a vbac at OHSU with the midwives and loved the care I received. they are very laid-back. Penni Harmon, CNM is my favorite.

I highly recommened Andaluz. The midwives there are wonderful and I really can't say enough about the experience. It was such a completely different experience than either of my hospital births (one of which was with a midwife).

I had a baby at St. Vincent's with a midwife (I think it was Women's Healthcare - they were in the Petercort office building?) five years ago. I had a good experience, but looking back, it was probably half-way between birthing with a traditional OB (which I did with my first) and birthing with a truly woman-centered midwife.

When I was pregnant with #3 I went with a midwife group in Oregon City (don't remember the name, but I think it is the only one) and planned a birth at Willamette Falls Hospital, which I had heard great things about. There were seven midwives in the practice and I met all of them throughout the pregnancy. I really liked 2-3 of them and my thoughts on the others ranged from ambivilant to "I really don't want her at my birth". I became increasingly uneasy about the birth until I left my last prenatal with them (at 37 weeks) in tears and told my husband I just could not continue on the road we were going. I called Andaluz the next day, met with them and never turned back.

I had a fantastic birth - I still can't believe how amazing the experience was (and it's been over a year). My only regret is that I didn't transfer sooner. I would have loved to experience all of my prenatal care in that atmosphere.

Good luck!

Hey mamablueberry, how could I have missed that you are a fellow PDXer as well as a fellow DDC member?? How cool! I also moved here from another state since my last birth & so have been stressed about my birthing options. I personally am starting with the simplest- what our insurance covers 100% & researching from there. If you scroll down in this forum a bit you'll see the thread I started asking anyone if they birthed at St Vincent's in Beaverton. My plan so far is a midwife assisted natural birth there, but I've got a lot more researching & thinking (& time! ) before I am positive that's what I want. Like I mentioned, that is what our insurance covers completely, & I'm also concerned that my labor is going to be lightning fast so I don't want to travel any further than necessary.

Anyway, good luck with your research, & I hope to run into you sometime! Are you going to the MDC picnic on June 2nd?

-nope, I would love to but it is my 6th anniversary. My In laws are flying in from the midwest just so dh and I can on a date.

Thank you so much everyone for the information. Andaluz looks really great as well as Alma. I will have to see if my insurance will cover either of them. I would really like a waterbirth, I spent most of my labor in a tub with my dd. One of my best friend's mom was my midwife, so it was easy to choose. I really appreaciate all the input from everyone! Thanks again,
