OK, I am at my wit's end.
2 years of terrible sleep for my dd has us all exhausted and it has escalated again lately.
She has always had extreme dificulty getting to sleep.
She was a reflux baby and I held her for naps for a year.
I am sure we have not helped matters! LOL
She could never 'turn off' and go to sleep ~ we swaddled her for 8 months because she would claw her face and hit herself to stay awake (at the moment she started to drift off).
At about 15 months we saw the chiro and it helped ~ she was a forceps delivery and had major misalignment of the atlas joint which is what insomniacs often have!
Even after that she would still take up to 2 hours to fall asleep at night on her own (holding was too stimulating). She would just take that long to settle alone in her crib, happy.
Now at 2, she is climbing out of her crib, afraid to be in the dark/ alone (this is behavioural stuff, I know but it connects) and taking hous to get to sleep, only to wake in a couple hours unable to go back to sleep.
Last night it was 11 pm to 5 am.
Bringing her to bed with us etc. is no help. She cries and begs to sleep but every time she gets close she shakes herself awake, slaps herself, has giggling fits, you name it, and sabotages her ability to sleep.
So she is over tired, can't nap, can't stay asleep, and even if we do get her caught up, she gets about 2 good nights in and then it starts again.

So... is this a sleep isue ~ the not shutting down/ self-waking behaviour? Like should we see a sleep specialist or is this just habit/ age/ it will pass...

Exhausted and wanting my well rested happy girl back!

I'd probably try to have her evaluated someplace, though I don't know where. Some sort of sleep clinic that specializes in children? Not sure if that even exists. If it were me, I'd try to do something. It sounds like some kind of sleep issue to me (and I have girls who wake frequently all night so I'm not typically alarmist).

Thanks

I am not alarmist either ( I mean she is two and has had this issue from day one!).
She actually had a weird facial tic this spring so had to have an MRI and EEG and all were normal, so that is one piece.
She does have allergies, and seasonal ones are bad right now.
We are actually waiting on an appt. with an immunologist for allergy stuff. We are pretty tough about her intake but there could still be unknowns (on top of dairy, soy and egg, argh!).
Anyway, thank you. I know we need to follow our mommy instinct, it is just EVERYONE has had sleep issues of some sort and so it seems normal, you know.
And if I hear one more 'let her cry' I'm gonna scream. She won't. She just won't sleep! So even if I were so inclined it wouldn't help!

Off to bed while I can!
