Hey all -
I am set to adopt a kitten, dumped with no mama cat on someones front yard. There are 5 kittens, all are spoken for (YAY!) and the rescue lady says they're ready to go home the end of May. K...I JUST got an email from her saying the foster mother thinks they're ready NOW to leave. They're 6 weeks. What do you think? I hope it's not a "I want them out of here" readiness. Does a 6 wk. old kitten need special care? That seems VERY young to me! Advice? TIA!

K...just got another update - he can't eat dry food...only cans.
Not sure about this...

ETA - Says it needs desitin for it's butt. Says it's from the milk they've given him. I hope he's not as fragile as he sounds!

I've had to take 4 week old kittens and teach them to eat. Six weeks should be OK. It's not like they would be getting more time with a mama cat. I usually wait until 12 weeks to separate kittens from a mama - the kittens learn so much in those extra weeks, and I think they turn out to be better pets.

You can gradually move the kitten from moist food to dry like this: Start off with moistened dry kitten food, maybe even mushed up if he shows no sign of being interested in it otherwise. Gradually, over several days or even weeks, make it more chunky and less mushed, then more dry and less watery.

I have never heard of using desitin for kitten's bottom. I would ask about this more.

what kind of milk are they giving the cats? cow's milk or special kitty milk? if its cows milk, maybe the cat is having poopoo issues and that's what the desitin is for? were they undernourished from the beginning? im glad youre taking one - it will have a good home. i love kitties. i would suggest finding a good vet to take it to as soon as you get it to have it looked at, sort of like a well baby visit. let us know how it goes! when are you getting the kitty?

Tonight at 6! They've been to the vet every day since last week, and they say the vet is pleased with their progress & thinks they're OK to go home. I don't know what kind of milk, will ask!
Thanks!

Well, if they were with their mama, that would be way too young. My kittens will be 5 weeks old on Tuesday, and they are interested in tasting the food, but not really eating it just yet. There is no way that mine would be ready in a week.

HOWEVER, since your kitten was hand raised, it is possible that they got them on solid foods a little earlier than traditionally done with kittens that have their mama. It is pushing it a bit, but I imagine it is hard to keep up with bottle feeding 5 kittens. And since the vet gave the go-ahead, it should be ok.

The soft food is because they don't really have all of their teeth at that age. They can later be transitioned to dry.

Now desitin for cats?! That I do question. They could accidently injest it when they groom themselves. Do you have a vet lined up? If you could, see if you can call or met with him or her and discuss this whole situation. It would be a good idea to take the kitten in within a couple of days of getting it.

I hope all goes well. Good Luck

You should pick up a can of Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR) or the second step kitten milk (Weaning Food). You'll want to mix up a little and mix it with his canned food. He probably needs the extra nutrients for a while. Buy the highest quality canned food you can afford. Canned food is actually better than dry for kittens and adult cats because they need the extra water intake. Especially kittens, because they get dehydrated quickly. Also feed him frequently throughout the day because kittens can get low blood sugar quickly too. Low blood sugar looks like a really sleepy lethargic cat that doesn't want to wake up. If that happens, squirt some KMR in his mouth.

If his anus is red and sore he could have a bacterial or protozoal infection in his gut and might need a course of metronidazole (antibiotic/antiprotozoan med) from the vet. Use petroleum jelly or lanolin on his hiney instead of Desitin, they aren't toxic if ingested.

Good luck!

let me know if you have trouble finding homes. i MIGHT be able to take one or two. i say MIGHT because it really depends on boyfriend and i dont know if he'll go for it - we have one cat who seems to enjoy FINALLY being the only cat (but shes never been with baby kitties!) and a bebeh on the way in july. i might be able to help you find homes as well. is it silly to think that a cat would prefer to be alone? i dont want to interupt nashi's little world, but at the same time, i dont want her little world to run everyone else's.

Sadly though 2 DO need homes. Five were lined up but only myself and 2 others showed to get them. The other 2 never came. I wish I could have taken 2 but this is my third cat, I just can't handle anymore. (Plus, we have Dakota! )
