Hi All,

I'm new to cloth dipering, but so far we love it! I just feel so good and environmentally friendly about it. My ds is almost two, and I'm due next month with my second! And I just couldn't imagine using diposables for two kids (ecologically and financially speaking).

Anyway, we started using prefolds with Kushies covers (just vinyl coated polyester with cotton lines gussets), and it's going pretty well- except for the occasional leaks... Pee tends to be no problem, but sometimes it does get on the cotton gussets... But the biggest problem is when the poo gets on the cotton gussets- which it always does! It's a pain to get out because the elastics scrunch it all up... So, my question is- am I doing something wrong? Should I be making a "poo pouch" with the profold? How? And how exactly should the edges of the prefold fit with the diaper cover?

I'm not sure if this is just the problem with the Kushies covers... I've ordered a bunch on other types of diapers and covers, so I'll see how it goes with them.

Also- I read that with the vinyl coated polyester covers you're just supposed to wipe if necessary and air dry in between uses, but mine get pretty stinky... Could this be from traces of pee on the cotton gussets?

Thanks Mamas!

Are you just laying the prefold in the cover or actually fastening it like with a snappi or something? If you are just laying it in there I would start fastening it. I've never used Kushis, but I also haven't ever heard anything good about them, I think I'd try a different cover and maybe some fitted dipes instead of prefolds.

I would get a different cover, I have a Kushies cover and it leaks terribly. I hardly use it, we got it with a pack of Kushies fitteds which aren't very absorbent.

We have proraps covers, but DD is only 4 months so I don't know how that would work w/ your DS. There are tons of different covers out there. Good luck!

I'm a little confused. Is the problem that the poop is getting on the cover, or that it's escaping from the cover and onto the clothes?

If the problem is that the poop is getting on the cover, I personally think that's what the cover is there for. Some people are able to fold and fasten the prefold in such a way that they don't get anything on the covers, but I've never found that to be possible/worthwhile. I just lay the diaper down (possibly folding it down in the back if needed), put the baby/child on it, fold it in thirds between the legs, bring the folded part up into the front, spread it out a little, bring the "wings" up from the back, and fasten with a Snappi. You can get a tighter, more leak-proof fit by placing the Snappi as low as possible on the hips, just above the legs, but my daughter complains that it's too tight when i do that.

If the problem is that the poop is escaping from the cover, then I think you need different covers. I've had a lot of luck with Bummis Super Whisper Wraps, ProRaps, and Mother-Ease Rikki Wraps.

Thanks Mamas!

So far the poo has not escaped from the cover, but it looks really close to doing so... I was hoping there was a way to prevent it from getting on the covers. I have way more prefolds than covers, and I was hoping to be able to reuse the covers in between washings...

Also, DS is a super soaker, and I've haven't been able to use just one prefold on him- we use two at night, and prefolds with a thick liner during the day. He soaks through everything... Maybe the thickness of the diapers is what's contributing to the poo escaping, since there is no proper pouch in the middle...

Some people find it helpful to roll the edges of the diaper in toward the middle, instead of folding it the way I described previously. If you get the fit around the legs tight enough, this forms a sort of "dam" to prevent the poop from escaping onto the cover. This is known as the "jelly roll fold" if you want to look for more information about it.

What kind of prefolds are you using? If you're using the ones with 6 layers of cloth in the middle, you may want to try the "premium" type with 8 layers of cloth.

Also, if you're not changing the diaper every time it's wet, you may find it helpful to do that -- most people change cloth diapers much more often than they would change paper diapers on the same child. (Of course nighttime is a whole separate issue. My daughter didn't tolerate wet diapers at night, so it's only been recently that we haven't had to change her in the middle of the night.)

Thanks again! I'll try the jelly roll fold. We're using the standart (not premium) prefolds...

As for changing- I change the diaper whenever DS tells me it's wet... We're going through a bit of an issue with changing diapers at the moment and since I'm 8 months pregnant it's a bit hard to wrestle with him to change a diaper when he's not in the mood... So we go through about 5 diapers a day. But what surprised me initially was that he'd rather have a cloth diaper put on than a disposable! That was great incentive to help me make the switch.
