well.. we finally got a TV cabinet - dh picked it up this afternoon. i say finally because i had been delaying getting a cabinet for 20 months in hopes of getting rid of the TV. because of this, our TV lived in it's box from the moment it arrived in our house, with the front cut off so that we could see the screen. no, i am not kidding. there are pics below to prove it. it looks shocking IRL, believe me. the picture makes it look half decent - it's not. it's like a world of it's own in there, thanks to dd making it her new toy box.
well recently i made some new rules regarding TV and dh fully supports it, and so i decided the TV wasn't going to go anywhere afterall. i have to admit i am finally comfortable with the decision as we only watch "sensible" stuff like playschool and other good kid shoes, news, documentries and carefully screened dvd's when the kids are around. on a side note, when the kids are asleep, we whip out the bad shit like borat and sorority boys for a good laugh. we don't have cable (yay for free channels) and dh and dd know that when it's off, it's off.. there are no if's and's or but's and i'm happy with that!
anyway (i never stop rambling)... i got soooo sick of looking at the box (not the TV, the actual cardboard box) and finally caved in and bought a cabinet - it's all wood and unstained.
i need some help with what color i should stain or paint it. i am not going to match it up to our current place since we will be moving in the next couple of months (and i don't know what the new place is going to be like). and i'm not going to match it up to our current furniture since we are going to sand down our dining table and our chairs are unstained too. our lounge is also going to be covered with a removable cover so it can be cleaned easily from now on. and i haven't decided on any of those colours either... i am going to base it around the cabinet colour.
i was thinking of white stain or white something (just not white distressed) for the cabinet, as i like white, it's versatile, as close as i'm going to get to a country look, and i can change the decor from summer to winter style more cheaply than if it was stained a darker colour (imagine white cabinet, white and chocolate colors used for the rug and lounge in winter, and white and mint green and blue used for the rug and lounge in summer). in terms of taste and design, i am not the frilly and flowery type, nor am i the modern sleek type. just homey, pretty and simple. dh said white is nice, but it will get dirty very quickly and i just said "well, i guess we'd better clean more often then, eh?"

here are the pics of the cabinet:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...netpics002.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...netpics003.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...tpics001-1.jpg

oh, and our wonderful cardboard cabinet:
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...cabinetpic.jpg

opinions please! i will let you know of the final result (with pics).
feel free to ask any questions... i hope that i've made sense... it's very late here and i need food. if you want more pics of anything like my lounge or dining table and want to comment on what i should do with those too, i'd be more than happy to put some up.

That is a lovely cabinet. I would definately stain it. The wood grain is too pretty to cover up. I would go with a maple or cherry stain (something on the red end of things). I think there are stains with real color in them (blue, green, etc.). That might be an option.

thanks for your help stonefence!
we did stain the back of it last night to try it out and it looked so dingy and fake (the cedar stain did not look like cedar wood - but like white wood painted a fake horrible brown if you know what i mean) and it was such a disappointment. parts of the grain turned to black once they had been stained and it looked aweful and really dirty. we used the best stain brand and dh knows how to stain well - i guess the raw wood colour just did not take well to the stain colour. so dh is priming it right now to get it ready to paint white. he is using a spray gun to give it a professional finish. i will post a picture once it's done. we are painting it on wednesday as it needs to dry today.

Definitely go white! I love white painted furniture and paint stuff as often as I can.
