I've been thinking more and more about CDing our new wee one, but DH is not at all convinced it would be a good idea. He balks at the upfront cost and at the idea of tossing dirty dipes into our washing machine. We did briefly CD our oldest and he hated it, but we used almost exclusively prefolds at that time and this time I'd probably do a combination of fitteds+covers, and AIOs.

I work and he's a SAHD so his opinion really does matter a lot on this issue, he'll probably be changing more diapers than I will!

Any advice for me, links I could share with him regarding the benefits, helpful tips you may have used to bring a reluctant DH on board? I am not due until September so I do have time to bring him over to the dark side
but would like to be able to start building a stash soon if he agrees to it.

I had to convince DH to cloth diaper when we got pregnant with our first as well.. though it was a little bit easier becuase I stay at home and change most of the diapers. I convinced him by using one of the online calculators to show him the cost savings and by pointing out that I throw poopy baby clothes in the washer along with his work clothes which have lord knows what on them so how were diapers worse?? He also insisted we get a diaper sprayer. Maybe if you were able to show him how easy they are to use he would be more ammenable to using them? And showing him all the nasty stuff in sposies... I totally grossed DH out by pouring water in a sposie then cutting it open to show him what the inside is made of!!

Does he want to talk to my DH? My DH is the most enthusiastic cloth diapering advocate I've ever met. There were times, when I had three in diapers, that I was ready to quit, and it was DH who kept insisting that we stay with cloth. I could get DH to post something, if you like.

You have to pitch it based on what's important to him. Is he big on the environment? Saving money? What's healthiest for the baby? Send him this link http://www.borntolove.com/wrong.html to show him some of the negatives of using disposables. Pitch the convenience of never having to go to the store to buy diapers, etc. Make sure he knows that poop is poop and no matter what you use, he'll be touching some of it :) Good luck!

Cheaper in the long run. Saves tonnes of landfill waste. Keeps toxic chems off babe's butt. And a diaper is a diaper, you still have to change it. Unless he's washing them with a tub and a washboard, your machine will do the dirty work for you.

A couple things to add - we get way less poop-splosions with cloth than with sposies. When my ds was little, before we made the switch, we'd end up with poop up the back and changing outfits like 3-4 times per day.

My dh is big on using flushable liners. You don't need them because ebf just dissolves in the washer, but once baby starts on solids, the flushable liners can be a big help. The liner catches most of the poop and you flush it. Everything else can go in the pail as is and will come clean in the wash. When my husband tells people about cd'ing, he's all about the liners.

You can find some great information and stats to impress your DH at realdiaperassociation.org

The information on this helpful site is well researched. Maybe if your argument sounds "factual" he'll be more apt to believe in cloth diapering. I don't know a hubby in the world that wouldn't be impressed by how much money CDing saves!!!
