Jett has to wear a miserable plastic helmet for the next 11 months. He was born with one of the growth joints (suture) closed in his skull. He had surgery to remove the problem area and now wears the helmet to keep the bone from refusing prematurely.

The helmet can be painted, stickered, drilled a little bit, just about anything you can think of.

I was thinking of some stickers for motorcycle helmets maybe...??
Like these.

or the flames one you can click on on the left.

Jett is generally dressed in hawaiian shirts all summer and spent last winter in turtleneck onesies and corduroy pants. Not very baby-fied.

The one thing I would really like to do is have it say If you don't know, JUST ASK! across the front. Or some other similar, cooler sentiment.

Also, his name would good on there somewhere.

I have to clean it with rubbing alcohol, so that might be good to know...some paints would be ruined/removed by it, I know.

Okay, mamas. I'm dying for some killer suggestions! Let the creativity flow.

Edited to add helmet photos.

Is there any way to sew up some elasticized covers for it in some awesome fabrics? (I'm picturing lsomethign with elastic at the bottom, like a shower cap, but obviosuly more fitted to conform to the helmet's shape) That way, you could change the cover with the mood of the day, giving you lots more variety

That would be awesome for cooler weather. Right now, though, he can barely stand the heat it causes him to build up as it is.

When we spend much time outside, we have to take it off so he can cool off. Unfortunately, I predict a housebound summer.

First of all what a doll! He looks so sweet in that little helmet! I would say decorate it with stickers. Take a trip to the craft store/scrapbooking store and buy a ton. That way when you get bored with them you can change them out and add new ones. You could do holiday themes etc.. It also wouldnt add to the heat of the helmet and you could do things like adding his name etc.

Otherwise I would think paint pens would work well. I dont think that the alchohol would hurt the design. For design, I would add his name in front/back and then do a mosaic or something similar all over covering the entire thing. Otherwise find a cool hawaiian print and trace it and apply it and color the whole thing in (background one color leaves etc another)

Cant think of anything else right now. I dont think you would want to add fabric or anything, like you said the heat would be tough. If anything, ask at the craft store, they might be able to help. Hths

First, yes, he is ADORABLE. I'm holding dd2 up and says, see, you want to date boys as cute as that when you're older.

Second, I second the stickers because you could change them out. 11 months is a long time to stare at the same ol' thing, unfortunately.

Oh...I forgot to mention....he'll only be in this exact helmet for about 6 weeks. Then, he'll have two more helmets to complete the year. (Change 'em as he grows.)

hey mama!
What a cutie you have.. when is his Bday? He looks about the same age as my DS... and they both have awesme cheeks!! I am a pediatric PT, and have seen kids with DOC bands, which are very similar to the helmet your DS wears... I know of a place in CT that does a lot of them, and their website has awesme pics of cuties just like yours== check it out, you might get some good ideas!!! http://www.cranialtech.com/ParentsArea/photoalbum.asp
