I want to order a build-your-own diaper from Kindhearted Women for my newborn stash. Since this is our first baby, we haven't used CDs before, so I don't have any real preferences of my own yet. I can choose the inner - hemp, bamboo french terry, or organic velour. Which would you choose and why? Also, any reason why you would prefer serged over T&T?

Thanks for your input!

I have had good success with hemp, but the only other I have tried is cotton and micro fiber.

Hemp is wonderfully absorbent, but it can get really stiff sometimes, even as a soaker. I'd choose the bamboo or the organic cotton velour. I think it's a toss-up between the two, both are very soft.

I prefer t&t, just because it looks a little bit more finished.

if youre making you own with options, id go for the bamboo inner and ov topper for the soaker. i havent felt bamboo terry before, so thats why i didnt say that against the baby, but even though velour is cotton (well this kind is LOL) it has a little bit of a stay dry sort of thing as well because of the loops, its not totally stay dry buty its better than just plain cotton stuff against them, thohg pretty nice and absorbant and it feels great

i love hemp, but yeah it does sometimes get really stiff, and stink. bamboo itself i havent had stink, only the hemp with it, and ov i havent had stink at all, so if i could do it, thats what id do

congrats and have fun picking stuff for your new diapers!

oh and the t&t or serged options just are different to the baby to me, for a long time, anything t&t dug in horribly on his legs, but serged didnt, but a lot of people like the neater look of t&t. alsoemp t&t does get more stiff feeling to me, around the leg holes for a newwer baby id mucjh prefer to not get that, but thats me...

I like the velour for the inner. It is super soft and lush!

Lately (since I may have about 7 weeks), it all boils down to time. It took me 2 1/2 days to make about 12 t&t diapers. I made 7 serged in about 2 hours. You cut out a bunch of steps, and you have a nice stack of diapers much quicker. I think the rest will be serged for a while. I am starting to get a little nervous about finishing them all.

I would go with either the bamboo terry or the OV....probably the bamboo terry though if it were me because sometimes OV can get a bit stiff and lose it's softness (although not as stiff as hemp does) but my bamboo never seems to get stiff for some reason....I have a couple of bamboo terry flats that I just converted into prefolds and they are super soft and silky. But I don't think you can go wrong with either one really. And as far as serged vs T&T, I'd always go with serged but that's just me....I find that I don't get a good fit with most T&T dipes and I get leaks...the leg frill on the serged helps with my son. I like the look of the T&T dipes just not how they fit my son....and with a newborn, even if I liked T&T, I'd go with serged because I think it helps to contain newborn poo and pee much better....but that's JMO!
